    9 days / 8 nights

    Departure Port : Bergen
    Arrival Port : Bergen

    Ship : LE CHAMPLAIN

    • Ref : C021018

In the presence of the Academician Erik Orsenna, Stephen Lash, Chairman Emeritus of Christie’s Americas and Pierre Etienne from Christie’s France.

Set sail aboard Le Champlain for a 9-day cruise with an emphasis on art and nature. You will follow an all-new itinerary into the very heart of Scandinavia, to discover exceptional wild fauna and flora, and extremely rich cultural heritage.

Your voyage will begin in Bergen, famous for its seven mountains that surround the city centre. Bryggen, its Hanseatic wharf, still carries a few traces of the rich historic past of the city, which was founded by the Vikings over 900 years ago.

You will then set sail south for Denmark. You will discover Aarhus, European Capital of Culture in 2017, and call in at Copenhagen, a city of art and history.

You will undoubtedly fall under the charm of Stavanger, a small cosmopolitan and prosperous town on the Norwegian coast, with its harmonious blend of old and modern styles. During your stopover, walk the paved streets and admire the wonderfully preserved fishermen's houses that date from the 18th century.

Olden, a small village with two wooden churches and undeniable charm, will be your last port of call. It is located a few kilometres from Jostedalsbreen National Park, which is home to one of the last ice caps in Europe. There, you will be able to admire the Briksdal and Kjenndalen glaciers.

Located at the end of Byfjord, Bergen was the capital of Norway in the 12th and 13th Centuries and has preserved some very beautiful monuments from the time when it was home to royalty. Wandering through Bergen’s streets means going back in time, in search of the hidden treasures that have been listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. A veritable openair museum, Bergen is home to a thriving artistic community of painters, potters, jewellers. The Bergen cable car offers you a splendid panorama over the port and the surrounding fjords. Do not miss the visit to the old quarter with its narrow streets, a testimony of the power of the hanseatic League that controlled trade in Northern Europe at the end of the Middle Ages.

Voted the European Capital of Culture 2017, it is home to multiple styles of architecture, from traditional Danish houses to the wildest futuristic constructions. During your port of call, make sure you visit the ARoS Museum: one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe, it exhibits many avant-gardist works, such as “Your Rainbow Panorama”, a spectacular installation that seems to be floating in the air and offers breathtaking views over the city.

    Pierre Etienne

    Pierre Etienne

Pierre joined Christie’s in March 2018 as the International Director of the Old Master & 19th century department, bringing 25 years of experience in the field. With a background in economics, art and communication, his career started under the guidance of renowned Old Master paintings expert Eric Turquin.

For 15 years Pierre honed his expertise at Turquin’s practice, examining numerous works including several masterpieces, and became a qualified expert on paintings of the premodern era (up to the end of the 18th century). His subsequent research and writings – notably his thesis on the 18th century French painter Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié, published in 2000 – further anchored his specialism, with a focus on 17th and 18th century French paintings.

In 2007, Pierre joined the Old Master Paintings department at Sotheby’s and has worked actively towards the development of the department. He was responsible for many landmark sales, including that of a pastel by Jean-Etienne Liotard, setting an auction record for the artist in 2012. Pierre has also led the outstanding sale of the Grandchamp des Raux Collection in 2015, which realised over €8 million for 49 paintings from 17th to 18th century France.
