During an all-new 11-day expedition cruise aboard Le Dumont-d’Urville, time seems to stand still and, between the Seychelles and the island country of Madagascar, nature will plunge you into a dream.
From Victoria on the island of Mahé, you will first sail to La Digue, a veritable picture-postcard of the Seychelles: palm trees, granite rocks, white sand and crystal-clear waters.
You will then discover Aride, an unspoiled delight of the Indian Ocean, home to thousands of birds including some endemic species. On Curieuse Island, reputed for its red earth and for the Aldabra giant tortoises that have taken up residence there, take an excursion to the heart of the mangrove.
Then you will sail to Remire Island, an Eden lost in the Indian Ocean. Discover its abundant fauna as you explore both on land and under water. Fall in love with this idyllic port of call as you walk around the island and snorkel in its waters.

Also known as Antsiranana, this port of call is famous for its Emerald Sea lagoon, its picturesque bays, its iconic Pain de Sucre island, its majestic mountains, its idyllic beaches and its vibrant culture, all of which are invitations to discovery and fascination. Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.
Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In your hand luggage, remember to bring any medicines that you need, and possibly a small spare bag of toiletries (in case of delay in the delivery of your baggage by the airline). Diving - Expedition Cruise
Supervision of the dives
Your dives will be led by your PONANT instructor. He will take care of your safety and that all goes smoothly. On some diving sites, as in natural reserves or if the local regulations require it, a local guide will escort the diving.
Level required for scuba diving on this cruise
The minimum level required for scuba diving on this cruise is 2 star CMAS or the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent). The certification card, the diving log book and a recent medical certificate (less than 12 months) must be presented at the beginning of the cruise to our main diving instructor.
Process of the dives (certified divers)
The instructor reserves the right to check divers’ ability for maximum safety. As we will dive in remote places, the dives will be done without decompression stop. A safety stop of 3 minutes at 5 metres will be mandatory. The depth that can be reached will depend on the certification of the divers:
- For those with PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certificate (or equivalent), the maximum depth can be up to 25 metres.
- If two PADI Advanced Open Water Divers (or equivalent) wish to dive together independently, they must have a briefing first. They must have dive computers and are allowed to go to a maximum depth of 20 metres.
Duration of the dives
The diving activity lasts from 2 to 3 hours, which includes the journey to the diving site and the diving. This duration may vary according to the site, the level of divers, weather conditions and the number of participants. For experienced divers, the duration of dives varies between 35 and 60 minutes depending on the site, the diver’s experience and consumption.

Fauna and flora of the Indian Ocean
The fauna of the Indian Ocean is very varied. During the various dives, divers can observe various species of benthic fauna such as napoleon fish, oriental sweetlips, blackspotted sweetlips, batfish and pelagic fauna such as manta rays, gray reef sharks, dolphin fish, rainbow runner as well as endemic wildlife such as different soft corals.

Mahé has almost 70 beaches of fine sand, framed by the emblematic granite rocks, and whose crystal clear waters are renowned for their rich underwater life. The island is also famous for its splendid mountain panoramas accessible on hikes, such as the Morne Seychellois, which is 905 metres high and overlooks the Indian Ocean. Mahé is also an island full of history where fine colonial properties rub shoulders with Creole houses - and don’t forget the marvellous Botanical Gardens in Victoria.

Situated off the coast of Praslin, Curieuse has a distinguishing feature: its red earth. Discovered in 1768 by the French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne, it was ravaged by a fire in 1771 and then home to a leper colony of which a few vestiges still remain. Declared a national marine park in 1979, it is home to many underwater species, which can be discovered while scuba diving or snorkelling in the idyllic waters of the Indian Ocean. But above all, Curieuse is renowned for the hundreds of Aldabra giant tortoises that live there. It is highly likely that you will get the chance to meet these fascinating reptiles. Along with Praslin, it is also the only island on which the sea coconut grows wild.

Aride is an island in the Seychelles situated a few kilometres north-west of Praslin. Listed as a nature reserve, this pearl of the Indian Ocean will seduce you with the beauty of its landscapes of wild cliffs and fine-sand beaches. Protected from human impact and sometimes called “bird capital”, it is home to several endemic plants as well as exceptional wildlife. Most notably, it is the refuge of an impressive number of seabirds (Seychelles magpie-robins, terns, noddies, and more), and reptiles, such as Wright’s skinks, which can be found in the island’s wooded areas. Sea turtles can also be observed on the island’s beaches.

Located 6 km south-east of Praslin, this small piece of land that looks like paradise is the third-largest island in the Seychelles, despite its modest size (5 km by 3 km)! The southernmost atoll of the Seychelles, Farquhar is famous for its 10-metre high sand dunes and the deep waters of its lagoon in infinite shades of blue and green. It was among the first atolls of the Outer Islands to be discovered and bears the name of the first British Governor of Mauritius, Sir Robert Farquhar, who published the act abolishing slavery in 1813. Only North Farquhar is still inhabited by some farmers, who perpetuate ancestral artisanal traditions. On South Farquhar and Goëlette, you will be able to observe hundreds of crabs as well as thousands of sooty terns and black-naped terns, a species that exclusively lives on coral islands.

In the heart of the Nosy Be archipelago, discover Nosy Tanikely, nicknamed the “island of little earth.” In addition to a magnificent white sand beach bordering a lagoon of crystal-clear waters, the island, which is uninhabited, has exceptional marine and terrestrial biodiversity. Thanks to this, the area has been classified as a “marine and coastal protected area” since 2010. It is a perfect spot for swimming and snorkelling. Diving
During an introduction to scuba diving or a more advanced dive for holders of the necessary certifications (level 1 on yachting cruises and 2 on expedition cruises), explore the planet’s most beautiful underwater environments in the company of a PONANT diving instructor, as well as a local instructor when required by local legislation. They will ensure that your dives are conducted smoothly and safely: supervision of four certified divers at a time, evaluation of diving skills and experience, adherence to safety stops, zones and the maximum depth authorised.

Departure from the hotel in the early morning to reach George Camille, one of the most respected artists of the Seychelles nation. Your day will begin with a visit to his workshop, located on the outskirts of Victoria (about 30-minute drive). During this exclusive interview, he will welcome you into his colourful world by revealing his artistic journey through his vision, his style, and the innovative processes behind all his creations. You will also enjoy the privilege of sharing a small artistic demonstration and its learning. You will then be taken to Kaz Zanana Gallery & Café, the public gallery of the artist, located in Victoria within an old wooden house with typical Creole architecture and restored.
Then, lunch will be served in a Creole restaurant. At the end, you can take a walk through the centre of Victoria before heading back to your hotel in the early afternoon.

Option 2: Private Copolia Trail - limited to 10 participants
Departure from the hotel in the early morning to reach the Copolia trail, accompanied by your private guide. You will undertake an intimate hiking adventure through the lush nature of the island. First, you will go through a secondary forest of sand, cinnamon and rubber trees. As the trail ascends, you will observe numerous interesting endemic and indigenous plant species along with a diversed fauna of endemic birds such as the Seychelles Bulbul, the Blue Pigeon, and Sunbirds. The effort of your ascent will be rewarded with a magnificent view from the summit, providing a panorama of the east coast of Mahe, the Sainte Anne Marine National Park, and in the distance, the islands of Praslin and La Digue.

Hiking on the Copolia trail is of moderate difficulty. It is not recommended people with reduced mobility or walking difficulties. Please wear comfortable hiking shoes, water, a light and casual outfit, sunglasses, hat or cap, sunscreen and camera.

The Val de Près Estate is a national monument and a heritage site located in the southern part of Mahe Island. You will be warmly welcomed in the Creole manner with a welcome cocktail accompanied by traditional snacks consisting of "Coco Zerm", coconut, and dried fruits.
Accompanied by your guide, you will visit the plantation house "Gran Kaz" at the heart of the estate. Built in the 1870s, it bears witness to the history of the former owners through old photos, furniture, and other historical artifacts.
Then, you will discover everything you need to know about Seychellois culture and traditions. Its Creole cuisine and all the flavorful Seychellois culinary secrets. Its traditional musical instruments and dances, handmade crafts crafted with local products, and much more.

Enjoy a welcome drink before departing for a pleasant walk between vanilla plants, sugar canne, variety of spices, fruit trees, and tropical flowers.
Then take a break for sit down and delight a tasting session of the garden’s fruits.

Day 2 – Chamarel and Central area
After breakfast, depart for Kot Marie-Michelle, a table d’hôte located in the heart of the island in the village of Midlands (about 1-hour drive).
Surrounded by mountains, sugarcane fields, tea plantations, and hunting grounds, it offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Kot Marie-Michelle specializes in traditional cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients. Vegetables are sourced from their garden or the village, and spices are roasted over wooden flames and ground manually on a roche-carri, just like the grandmothers of Mauritius used to use. In fact, this table d'hôte is run by two young grandmothers. It provides a unique experience of local life, offering authentic Mauritian cuisine and warm hospitality. The activity includes a culinary discovery before experiencing an authentic lunch (including several local dishes).
Then reach the Black River Gorges National Park which is an ancient primaeval forest, famous for being the home of endangered species such as the Mauritius Falcon. In earlier times, the extremely hard ebony found in the park was used in making warships in different parts of the world.
The Gorges Viewpoint offers a spectacular panoramic view of endless green stretches. You will be amazed to discover how high the viewing area is from the gorge. On the right side of the viewpoint, you can see a breathtaking waterfall.
Continue until the Chamarel Geopark. With distinct colours of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow, this geological curious happening has 15 metres of highly coloured dunes - an almost surreal, lunar-like spectacle of rainbow-hued sand dunes before your eyes. You will have the chance to view the gorgeous Chamarel waterfall. Three distinct streams plunge down almost 100 metres from the St. Denis River, down into the gorge. The sight of this impressive waterfall against the scenic forests and mountains is truly breathtaking.
Your day of visit ends at Ebony forest where you discover how rapidly Mauritian forests disappeared and why today Mauritius harbours one of the World’s most threatened flora and fauna populations during this 25-minute guided tour. Visit the native plant propagation nursery and see some of the rarest plants in the world being grown.

Day 3 – Chamarel / South East of Mauritius
Accompanied by your guide, you will depart to discover the scenic south of Mauritius.
After 30-minute drive, start your visit at Bois Cheri, the first tea plantation in Mauritius and dates back to 1892.
Visiting the Bois Chéri Estate is one of the main sites of the Mauritian Tea Route. This is the spot where tea-lovers will get to learn how tea is cultivated, picked and packaged. You will travel back in history throughout this visit and get a surprising feeling of tranquility. You will visit the tea production museum learning more about the history of tea in Mauritius. Nowadays Bois Cheri produces a new range of flavored teas, green teas and herbal teas. You may taste them during your visit. Get ready to be amazed by the richness and freshness of the flavours you are about to taste. The Bois Chéri offers a great panoramic view of the south of the island.
Your morning vissit continues until La Rhumerie de Saint Aubin. Located in the south of the island, this estate is a pioneer in the manufacture of agricultural rum. At l’atelier du Rhum, you can discover traditional techniques and all the process of rum making.
Prepare a “rhum arrangé” of your choice with seasonal fruits and seal the bottle for a souvenir to bring home. After the rum workshop, enjoy delicious dishes prepared with the rum at Le Saint Aubin restaurant, an old colonial house dating from 1819.
After your lunch, you can visit the Mini Ferme du Domaine de Saint Aubin, La Maison de La Vanille, where aromatic Vanilla pods are produced, La Serre d ’Anthurium du Domaine de Saint Aubin, Le Jardin Botanique du Domaine de Saint Aubin, Le Moulin du Domaine de Saint Aubin and La Boutique du Domaine de Saint Aubin where you can find other souvenirs.
