PONANT reveals the name of the first luxury cruise polar exploration vessel, a world-first hybrid electric ship propelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

PONANT revealed the name of its polar exploration vessel on Tuesday 4 September. This hybrid electric polar exploration vessel propelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a true world first. It will be named in honour of Commandant Jean-Baptiste Charcot, the "gentleman of the poles".

A homage to the famous French explorer

This new jewel in the fleet will bear the name of a great French explorer: Le Commandant Charcot. A professional explorer and passionate seafarer, Jean-Baptiste Charcot is an iconic figure in French polar expeditions. By giving his name to the company's polar exploration vessel, PONANT is paying homage to this "gentleman of the poles", respected by all.

The choice is even more meaningful because this new ship will feature the latest technology in relation to conservation of the environment and a scientific laboratory for oceanographic research and operational missions.
