G. Max Bernheimer

G. Max Bernheimer was a Deputy Chairman of Christie’s, and the International Department Head for Antiquities. Mr. Bernheimer joined Christie's in 1992, based in New York. Mr. Bernheimer served for several years as Director and Vice President of Bernheimer's Antique Arts, Cambridge, Massachusetts, a family business started by his great-great-grandfather in Europe in 1864. The Cambridge establishment, which had been in business since 1963, specialized in Antiquities, European, Asian, Islamic, Pre-Columbian and Native American art, as well as antique jewelry.

Mr. Bernheimer's background eminently qualifies him in this field. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from Clark University (Worcester, Massachusetts) in history with a specialization in ancient art and archaeology, he earned a Master of Arts degree from Harvard University in the field of Classical Civilizations, writing a thesis entitled "Catalogue of Greek Engraved Gems in the collection of the Harvard University Art Museums." In addition, Mr. Bernheimer has studied at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, and the London Institute of Archaeology where he studied ancient jewelry technology. During the summer of 1991, he participated in archaeological excavations at Caesarea in Israel, sponsored jointly by the University of Maryland and Haifa University.

As Deputy Chairman and International Specialist Head of Christie's Antiquities Department in the United States, Mr. Bernheimer provided a high level of expertise and service to clients across the country who have an interest in Greek, Roman, Etruscan, Egyptian and Near Eastern art and artifacts.

Bernheimer is the author of several important publications, including “Glories of Ancient Greece: Vases and Jewelry from the Borowski Collection” 2001; “Ancient Gems from the Borowski Collection,” 2007; and a contributor to “Reflections on Ancient Glass from the Borowski Collection,” 2002; and “Dragons, Monsters and Fabulous Beasts,” 2007.
