Arguni is most notable for its ancient rock paintings. These can be found high in the mountainous terrain or on the side of the limestone islands that dot the bays and coastal areas. The origins of the images are not fully understood and some academics have estimated their age to be around 6 – 7,000 years. There are similarities in style to northern Australian indigenous rock art as well as the mythical animal – human figures that stretch across the entire island of New Guinea.
