Corinto is located on a narrow island connected to the mainland. It is the largest commercial port in Nicaragua. Its name echoes the Isthmus of Corinth and its famous canal. It is the gateway for discovering the charming city of León. The capital of Nicaragua until 1851, León has preserved magnificent vestiges from the colonial period. Its beautiful and intact cathedral, built in the late 18th century, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is an exceptional illustration of social, religious and artistic syncretism. Its understated décor reflects the transition from the Baroque style to Neoclassicism. The artefacts in the Chorotega museum are fine examples of the treasures of pre-Columbian civilisations.
