Seated in Kvarner bay, the island of Krk is the largest in Croatia. Its eponymous capital provides sea access and its medieval centre is pedestrianised. Overlooking the coast, the massive proportions of Frankopan castle are astounding: these are the remains of ancient fortifications. Just as surprising is the stonework of the Romanesque cathedral of the Assumption, which displays traditional Krk architecture. A few minutes walk will bring you to the waterfront, and then to Porporela beach, where clear blue waters await you.
