Mytilini is the ancient capital of Lesbos, an island in north of the Dodecanese archipelago. Once you reach the port, you will be met by the splendid vision of Byzantine architecture and domed churches. On the main square, facing the Aegean sea, you can contemplate the statue of Sappho in homage to the Ancient Greek poetess. Set on the slopes of a steep plateau, the air in the historical centre is filled with the scent of aniseed, used for making a very reputed ouzo. Sip this aperitif in one of the traditional taverns with their roughly-hewn wooden tables. It will be served to you with divine local olives prepared in brine.
