Located on the west coast of Sumatra Padang is the largest, and capital, city of West Sumatra Province. Home to the Minangkabau culture, Padang was a major trade centre for the Dutch and British East India companies. Up until the 18th century the major trade product was gold, originating from the gold mines in the region, adding to Sumatra’s reputation as the ‘Island of Gold.’ When the mines were exhausted, the emphasis turned to other products such as coffee, salts and textiles.
Join your expedition team and local guides for a bus tour of Padang and the surrounding region to experience the culture of the Mingkabau people as well as sights of historical and cultural importance.
