Grace Fielder
Grace Fielder (PhD, UCLA) is professor emerita of Russian and Slavic Studies at the University of Arizona and has held research grants from Fulbright, IREX, ACLS, Centre for Advanced Study (Sofia), and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. She was also part of the translation team for Bai Ganyo: Incredible Tales of a Modern Bulgarian, a comic classic of Eastern European literature. Grace’s research interests are primarily on the sociolinguistics of the language and identity on the Balkan Peninsula. Her courses on Balkan history focus on the emergence of distinct national identities out of the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Venetian and Russian Empires. Grace has studied the local lore, music, and cuisine of this region, and has moonlighted as a lavender harvester on the Dalmatian island of Hvar.
