Kaarin Cecilia Phelps
American soprano Kaarin Cecilia Phelps is the Grand Prize Winner of the 2024 Concours International de Chant George Enesco and makes her debut this season at the Enescu Festival as Antigone in the opera Oedipe.
Recognized for her powerful voice and dramatic stage presence, she has already been invited to Wagnerian roles. She began the 2025/2026 season invited by the Wagner in Vermont Festival and incarnated Dritte Norn / Götterdämmerung and the cover of Sieglinde / Die Walküre. She also makes her debut this season at the Opera de Monte-Carlo in the role of Ortlinde / Die Walküre.
After beginning her career as a mezzo-soprano, she debuted Donna Elvira / Don Giovanni with the Festival Lyrique de Samoëns and turned to soprano repertoire thereafter. Recently, she performed Clotilde / Norma and will return as Kate Pinkerton / Madama Butterfly at the Opera de Toulon.
As a recitalist, she performs often with pianist Hugo Philippeau. They interpret lesser known American and Finnish art songs.
Originally from Massachusetts, Ms. Phelps lives in Paris and makes frequent returns to the United States to perform.
