In collaboration with The Explorers Club, this unique voyage will feature renowned underwater imagemakers Julie Ouimet and Michel Labrecque, who have journeyed to some of the planet’s most off-the-beaten-path destinations and whose scientific missions have contributed to vital conservation efforts including the creation of a marine protected area.
Embark with PONANT aboard Le Bougainville for a 13-day expedition cruise in the Indian Ocean. A chance to discover stunning natural environments, exceptional wildlife and UNESCO World Heritage sites loaded with history.
From Victoria on the island of Mahé, you will first sail to La Digue, where a veritable picture-postcard of the Seychelles awaits you: palm trees, granite rocks, white sand and crystal-clear waters.
You will extend these activities at sea and on land on the sublime Saint François Atoll.
Further on, the small islands Astove will be an opportunity to snorkel and dive among bright-coloured sea life, before reaching Aldabra Atoll, a largely untouched natural sanctuary listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. Edged with mangrove and fine sandy beaches, it is home to the largest colony of land turtles in the world.
After a stop on the sublime Assumption Island, your next ports of call will provide opportunities to discover several of the wonders of Tanzania. You will explore the ruins of the 13th-century Swahili trading past of Kilwa Kisiwani, the small coral island of Misali as well as Pemba Island and its clove plantations and fantastic scuba diving.
This fabulous trip will draw to an end in Zanzibar, a city with superb UNESCO-listed buildings, blending African, Arab, Indian and European influences over more than a millennium.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.
Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.
Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. Ideal clothes for life on board:
During the days spent on board, you are advised to wear comfortable clothes or casual outfits. The entire ship is air-conditioned, so a light sweater, a light jacket or a shawl may be necessary. When moving about in the public areas of the ship and the decks, light but comfortable shoes are recommended.

In the evening, you are advised to wear smart-casual attire, especially when dining in our restaurants where wearing shorts and tee-shirts is not allowed.

PRECAUTIONS:
In your hand luggage, remember to bring any medicines that you need, and possibly a small spare bag of toiletries (in case of delay in the delivery of your baggage by the airline). Remember to always have your travel documents with you in case you need them: hotel vouchers, cruise vouchers, return flight tickets... Never leave them in your hold luggage.
All our cabins have a safe. We recommend not to go ashore with valuable jewellery.

Diving
Supervision of the dives
Your dives will be led by your PONANT instructor. He will take care of your safety and that all goes smoothly. On some diving sites, as in natural reserves or if the local regulations require it, a local guide will escort the diving.
Level required for scuba diving on this cruise
The minimum level required for scuba diving on this cruise is 2 star CMAS or the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent). The certification card, the diving log book and a recent medical certificate (less than 12 months) must be presented at the beginning of the cruise to our main diving instructor.
Process of the dives (certified divers)
The instructor reserves the right to check divers’ ability for maximum safety. As we will dive in remote places, the dives will be done without decompression stop. A safety stop of 3 minutes at 5 metres will be mandatory. The depth that can be reached will depend on the certification of the divers:
- For those with PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certificate (or equivalent), the maximum depth can be up to 25 metres.
- If two PADI Advanced Open Water Divers (or equivalent) wish to dive together independently, they must have a briefing first. They must have dive computers and are allowed to go to a maximum depth of 20 metres.
Duration of the dives
The diving activity lasts from 2 to 3 hours, which includes the journey to the diving site and the diving. This duration may vary according to the site, the level of divers, weather conditions and the number of participants. For experienced divers, the duration of dives varies between 35 and 60 minutes depending on the site, the diver’s experience and consumption.

Mask and snorkel: for health reasons due to Covid-19, we strongly recommend that you come on board with your own mask and snorkel .As an exception, you will be able to borrow them in accordance with sanitary conditions.
The passenger may participate in scuba diving activities, subject to compliance with certain conditions established in accordance with the health, scientific and medical measures applicable on the day of the dive.

Fauna and flora of the Indian Ocean
The fauna of the Indian Ocean is very varied. During the various dives, divers can observe various species of benthic fauna such as napoleon fish, oriental sweetlips, blackspotted sweetlips, batfish, and pelagic fauna such as manta rays, gray reef sharks, dolphin fish, rainbow runner as well as endemic wildlife such as different soft corals.

The Explorers Club
Julie Ouimet and Michel Labrecque
Julie Ouimet and Michel Labrecque are internationally known underwater imagemakers, speakers, and field guides, as well as Fellows of The Explorers Club and of The Royal Canadian Geographic Society. They organized two scientific missions to Clipperton atoll that contributed to the creation of a marine protected area. For their outstanding achievements in Field Science and Conservation, they were awarded The Explorers Club Citation of Merit in 2018, and were twice granted the honor of carrying the Explorers Club flag.
From the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of St. Lawrence and beyond, they have produced captivating visuals for major networks like Discovery and CBC. Their expertise in expedition logistics has taken them to some of the world's most remote and uncharted destinations, including the Comoros and Oman. Additionally, Julie and Michel have co-authored numerous magazine articles and a coffee table book, Clipperton. In 2021, they co-founded Anticosti Ecotours, a land and underwater tour company based on Anticosti Island, Quebec, Canada’s newest UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Julie, a talented underwater expedition videographer and short film producer, has had her films showcased and awarded at festivals across Europe and North America. She is a member of the Ocean Artists Society and an inductee into the Women Divers Hall of Fame.
Michel, an accomplished underwater photojournalist and commercial photographer, is also a skilled dive educator and Small Vessel Operator. He served as a lieutenant in the Royal 22nd Regiment (infantry), bringing a wealth of discipline and leadership to his expeditions.

Discover Mahé, the main island of the Seychelles and also the largest of the archipelago, home to the capital, Victoria. Mahé has almost 70 beaches of fine sand, framed by the emblematic granite rocks, and whose crystal clear waters are renowned for their rich underwater life. The island is also famous for its splendid mountain panoramas accessible on hikes, such as the Morne Seychellois, which is 905 metres high and overlooks the Indian Ocean. Mahé is also an island full of history where fine colonial properties rub shoulders with Creole houses - and don’t forget the marvellous Botanical Gardens in Victoria.

La Digue Island is a veritable concentration of all the beauty of the Seychelles. Located 6 km south-east of Praslin, this small piece of land that looks like paradise is the third-largest island in the Seychelles, despite its modest size (5 km by 3 km)! Turquoise waters just asking you to swim in them, lush vegetation sheltering giant tortoises, beaches of fine sand fringed with coconut trees and surrounded with those emblematic large granite rocks with their pink highlights like at the famous Anse Source d’Argent: the perfect picture postcard… Authentic and preserved, the island follows a peaceful rhythm, with the only means of transport along its little roads being bikes or traditional oxcarts.

In the heart of the Outer Islands of the Seychelles, St. François Atoll paints the Indian Ocean in an infinite palette of blues. This coral atoll, made up of the Bijoutier and St. François islands, is exactly what people imagine when they think of the Seychelles. Formed around volcanos having vanished into the abyssal depths of the Indian Ocean, its islands are protected by splendid and fragile coral reefs. Here, the population is composed of myriad birds on land and of sea turtles and a multitude of fish in the water, making this the ideal place for hiking or snorkelling.

Closer to Madagascar than to Victoria, Astove is the southernmost island in the Seychelles. It is part of the Aldabra group, in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles. Now uninhabited, this coral island covered in coconut trees was once home to the employees that worked on the coconut plantations. Renowned for the richness of its seabeds, Astove Atoll is now a top destination for fishing enthusiasts. It also attracts experienced divers, who visit the atoll to explore the “Astove Wall”, where the sea floor drops to a depth of about 40 metres. The wall is covered in coral and many fish and green sea turtles can be found there.

Located in the very heart of this faraway archipelago, the Aldabra Atoll is considered to be one of the last virtually untouched sanctuaries on earth, where a large population of sea turtles has found refuge. Assumption Island is part of the Aldabra group (Outer Islands), situated in the south-west of the Seychelles. Discovered in the mid-18th century by the French captain Nicolas Morphey, this bean-shaped island covered in dunes and shrubs is relatively flat. A handful of people live there, in a small village in the island’s west. The island’s beaches are a major egg-laying and breeding site for sea turtles. The surrounding waters are ideal for scuba diving. This is where Jacques-Yves Cousteau filmed some of the scenes for his famous documentary film “The Silent World”, released in 1956.

Near the Tanzanian coast, around 300 km south of Dar es Salaam, the island of Kilwa Kisiwani is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Occupied from the 9th century to the 11th century, it reached its heights in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was described by the Moroccan explorer Ibn Battouta as “one of the most beautiful cities in the world.” A former Swahili trading city, the island prospered from the trade of gold and ivory from the inland regions. The remains of its former port city cover a large part of the island. Those of its superb Great Mosque, the oldest mosque remaining on the coast of East Africa, are well worth a visit.

The second-largest island in the Zanzibar Archipelago, Pemba Island captivates, surprises and fascinates. You will be enchanted by the songs of the island women, on the beaches of fine sand, as they gather red algae at low tide. A unique sight! Mountainous with hills of fertile land and bearing the nickname ““the Green Island”, it is bordered by quiet shores, brimming with authenticity. Banana trees, coconut trees, clove trees, nutmeg trees… its lush vegetation ensures the local production of the spices that has made its reputation (primarily cloves but also nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric, pepper, etc.).

Renowned for its underwater world, Misali became a protected conservation area in 1998. So, it’s possible to admire its sea beds and swim there, but not to fish. If conditions allow, you’ll perhaps have the chance to see varied underwater fauna. To the north-east of the island, a white sandy beach, bathed in stunningly transparent turquoise water, is an ideal place to relax.

Once a mythical post along the legendary Indian Ocean trade route, today a certain whiff of adventure still pervades in Zanzibar. Located off the coast of Tanzania, this place often referred to as “spice island” is brimming with natural treasures, such as Jozani Forest, the last remains of the huge primeval forest that once covered the island, home to a unique ecosystem. This port of call will also be the moment to discover ”Stone Town”, the historical centre of Zanzibar, a UNESCO World Heritage site. A veritable labyrinth of narrow streets lined with houses made from coral stone, it is home to sumptuous buildings in a multitude of architectural styles, the result of the blending of African, European and Indian cultures.
Discover La Digue
Fall under the spell of La Digue, one of the most beautiful islands in the Seychelles, and its unique gentle way of life.
From its picturesque port, La Passe, to the must-see Union Estate Park, La Digue exudes a singular kind of magic. This estate, with its fine Creole house and its coconut oil factory, offers a glimpse into life in the past. The island’s beaches are among the world’s most splendid, particularly L’Anse Source d'Argent, a veritable paradise for swimmers and a dream come true for photographers. Its fine sand and majestic granite rocks have charmed visitors for centuries, as has Grand Anse Beach.
Experienced birdwatchers will perhaps be lucky enough to spot a Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone), with its distinctive black plumage.
· This excursion involves walking for around an hour, with a journey in a vehicle on a bumpy road (due to packed-down sand).

Kilwa Ruins on foot
Your guided walking tour will start right after you disembark the vessel by tender or zodiac. At the top of the pier, your guide will give you a brief introduction on the different sites and the historical setting. The ruins will lead you to the world of sultans and slavery, when Tanzania was an important trade centre, dealing in gold, ivory and slaves. The reliability of the Monsoon winds made navigation easy and predictable.
The main area that will be visited has a number of sites: The Malindi Mosque and cemetery, Gereza: a fort which can be seen from far out at sea, Makutani: a walled site with the main palace, residences and private mosques, Several mosques and the Great House.
The different buildings are all in different states of disrepair, but it is astounding how well preserved some of them are. You will not have a hard time imagining the wealth of the Sultans; it is easy to envisage the royal lifestyle and the splendour of the time.
The United Nations declared the ruins a World Heritage Site and invested, both money and effort, in restoring the ruins with artisanal methods, excavating more, making the local villagers aware of the history, the ruins and its importance, and training guides to lead groups around the sites.
· This tour is done entirely on foot on paved and unpaved terrains. Wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. There are toilet facilities while on this tour. Depending on the tide you might disembark directly onto the beach (might be a wet landing). Local population does not like to have their picture taken, out of respect, kindly ask before taking photographs.

Diving
During an introduction to scuba diving or a more advanced dive for holders of the necessary certifications (level 1 on yachting cruises and 2 on expedition cruises), explore the planet’s most beautiful underwater environments in the company of a PONANT diving instructor, as well as a local instructor when required by local legislation. Fall under the spell of La Digue, one of the most beautiful islands in the Seychelles, and its unique gentle way of life.
From its picturesque port, La Passe, to the must-see Union Estate Park, La Digue exudes a singular kind of magic. This estate, with its fine Creole house and its coconut oil factory, offers a glimpse into life in the past. The island’s beaches are among the world’s most splendid, particularly L’Anse Source d'Argent, a veritable paradise for swimmers and a dream come true for photographers. Kilwa Ruins on foot
Your guided walking tour will start right after you disembark the vessel by tender or zodiac. At the top of the pier, your guide will give you a brief introduction on the different sites and the historical setting. The ruins will lead you to the world of sultans and slavery, when Tanzania was an important trade centre, dealing in gold, ivory and slaves. The reliability of the Monsoon winds made navigation easy and predictable.
The main area that will be visited has a number of sites: The Malindi Mosque and cemetery, Gereza: a fort which can be seen from far out at sea, Makutani: a walled site with the main palace, residences and private mosques, Several mosques and the Great House.
The different buildings are all in different states of disrepair, but it is astounding how well preserved some of them are. You will not have a hard time imagining the wealth of the Sultans; it is easy to envisage the royal lifestyle and the splendour of the time.
The United Nations declared the ruins a World Heritage Site and invested, both money and effort, in restoring the ruins with artisanal methods, excavating more, making the local villagers aware of the history, the ruins and its importance, and training guides to lead groups around the sites.
· This tour is done entirely on foot on paved and unpaved terrains. Wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. There are toilet facilities while on this tour. Depending on the tide you might disembark directly onto the beach (might be a wet landing). Day 1 - Zanzibar

From the pier, embark your mini-bus and take a 35km-drive to the south-east of Zanzibar Town to discover Zanzibar's first and only national park, the Jozani Forest Nature Reserve.
The reserve enjoys the largest portion of the Island's mature forest. With mangrove forests and saltmarshes, the area is an extremely rich mosaic of Zanzibar's diverse natural habitat, a haven for wildlife including the rare, endemic and endangered species. The forest hosts a sizeable population of the rare Red Colobus Monkey, found only on the main Island of Zanzibar. The park also shelters Sykes Monkey, Bush babies, Ader's duikers and Hyraxes.
Your guide will take you on a nature trail, lined with eucalyptus and mahogany trees, while explaining the medicinal properties of various plants. You will also learn more about the different animals, birds and reptiles that inhabit this tropical rainforest. Then, the mangrove boardwalk will take you over the swamps where you may have chance to see some of the tropical fishes and crabs between the mangrove roots.

You will depart for a spice tour in Zanzibar to understand why Zanzibar and spices are synonymous. In the 19th century, the Sultan of Oman introduced cloves to the island, which today is Zanzibar's main export product.
You will depart for the countryside, where you will have a look and taste of the spices grown mostly in off-road regions that are not easily accessible. You will stop in a luscious green clearing, where examples of spice plants are available for you to smell, taste, touch and see. You will get to see what the products you normally buy in packets or jars in supermarkets look and taste like fresh off the plant. The great variety of spices and plants grown here are used in food flavouring and preparation, cosmetics, dyes and traditional medicines. During the visit, you could enjoy a refreshment (coconut juice and fresh fruits).
You will then proceed to the village of Kizimbani, which will offer you a more authentic experience of local life in Zanzibar. Surrounded by traditional coral and wooden houses, local culture and a welcoming atmosphere, you will share a unique and intimate moment of interaction with the locals. You will enjoy some freshly made seaweed juice before visiting the seaweed factory where you will have the opportunity to view the entire process from raw seaweed to finished soaps. You will have lunch in a world-famous, unique local restaurant, known for its iconic location, fabulous food and character, inspired by natural resources and a strong twist of Zanzibar.

Following that, you will head to the beach for an authentic experience of initiation into the traditional Zanzibari dhow. This type of two-masted sailboat, characteristic of the Indian Ocean region, is traditionally used along the shores of Zanzibar and in other parts of East Africa. Colobus Monkey, found only on the main Island of Zanzibar. The park also shelters Sykes Monkey, Bush babies, Ader’s duikers and Hyraxes.
Your guide will take you on a nature trail, lined with eucalyptus and mahogany trees, while explaining the medicinal properties of various plants. You will also learn more about the different animals, birds and reptiles that inhabit this tropical rainforest. Then, the mangrove boardwalk will take you over the swamps where you may have chance to see some of the tropical fishes and crabs between the mangrove roots.
After exploring the forest and the trail laid out in the mangrove, you will head to a local restaurant for lunch.
Then, you will be escorted back to your hotel to enjoy an afternoon of leisure time.

Day 4 – Zanzibar

· Tanzania’s unit of currency is the Tanzania Shilling. The country has a cash-based economy. U. S dollars are widely accepted. Major credit cards are accepted on a very limited basis, mainly only in the largest shops, hotels, and lodges. ATMs are available in larger city centres like Dar Es Salam, but less in remote areas.
· The climate can be extremely hot and humid in Zanzibar but also can be quite windy. It is therefore advisable to wear comfortable shoes, light layer clothing – preferable cotton, apply sunscreen/sun lotion and a shoulder cover or wrap is advisable.
· For visits, it is preferable to wear appropriately discreet clothing, covering the upper body and legs below the knee.
· This tour involves being able to walk on uneven surfaces.
· Prescriptions and medications (we recommend you carry these in their original bottles and/or packaging.)
· Visitors to Tanzania are advised to avoid carrying plastic bags in their suitcases or hand luggage, except for the required “Ziploc type” bags specifically used to carry toiletries and other liquids of 100 millilitres or less through airport security screenings. These “Ziploc” bags must remain in the permanent possession of the traveller and not disposed of in Tanzania.
· Dhow experience requires good physical condition. It may involve wading into knee-deep water to board the traditional boats using a step ladder over the side of the vessel.
· Baggage allowance: 1 piece of baggage with a maximum weight of 20 kg for the regular flight. We have included 3 extra kg, so you are allowed to check-in 1 piece of baggage with a maximum weight of 23 kg. Hand baggage: 1 piece with a maximum weight of 10 kg for which we have included 2 extra kg, so you are allowed to take a hand baggage of a maximum weight of 12 kg, and the sum of three dimensions shall not exceed 115 cm (45in) (55 x 40 x 25 cm) or (22 x 16 x 10 inches).
