Along the Kimberley coast, sandstone cliffs rise above tidal waters, their colours shifting with the light. River mouths open into deep gorges, while offshore reefs emerge with the falling tide. Here in northwestern Australia, the sea offers a passage into a landscape where geological time is visible in the rock and each tide transforms the shore. A PONANT EXPLORATIONS expedition invites you to follow that coastline, exploring by ship and Zodiac with naturalist guides who bring its features into focus. Beyond the broad sweep of cliffs and islands, there are smaller discoveries: a bird above the mangroves, a pattern in the sandstone, water finding its way across an exposed reef.

Into the sandstone gorges

On the King George River, the scale of the Kimberley becomes unmistakable. Sandstone walls rise above the water, their surfaces changing from ochre to deep red and purple as sunlight reaches into the gorge. From a Zodiac, you can follow their contours upwards and appreciate the height of the cliffs from the river below. The river leads towards the twin King George Falls. Their flow varies with the season, while the surrounding rock provides an enduring record of the forces that have shaped this coast. Take time to look at the layers, ledges and weathered faces. The longer you observe, the more detail emerges from what first appeared to be a sheer wall of stone.

The reef revealed by the tide

At Montgomery Reef, the falling tide creates a different spectacle. As the water level drops, the reef becomes exposed and seawater drains from its surface in streams and cascades. What seemed to be open water gradually reveals a complex landscape at the edge of the ocean. Exploring by Zodiac brings this movement into view from close to the water. The expedition team plans outings around the tides and conditions, allowing time to observe a scene that continues to change. Here, the sea itself determines when the landscape can be seen.
