An albatross glides low over the swell. Beyond it, a dark coastline emerges, its cliffs rising above the Southern Ocean. South of New Zealand, islands separated by open water shelter wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. To explore them by sea is to discover just how much there is to encounter beyond the familiar shores of our region. With PONANT EXPLORATIONS, the journey invites a closer look: at the birds returning to their breeding grounds, the plants flourishing in a demanding climate and the delicate relationships that sustain life here.

Islands with their own identities

The Snares, Bounty, Antipodes, Auckland and Campbell island groups make up New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands. Together, they form a UNESCO World Heritage site recognised for its exceptional biodiversity. Their isolation has allowed distinctive species to evolve, giving each group a character of its own. The Snares crested penguin breeds only on its namesake islands. Sooty shearwaters return in great numbers during the breeding season, while tree daisy forest covers much of the main island. Even this small archipelago holds an extraordinary variety of life.

From the fiords to the open ocean

Selected PONANT itineraries combine Subantarctic exploration with New Zealand’s southern coast. In Fiordland, forested slopes rise above deep waterways and waterfalls descend from cliffs shaped by ancient glaciers. Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound reveal different aspects of this landscape, with views unfolding as the ship makes its way through the fiords. Voyages that include Macquarie Island extend the journey into Australia’s Subantarctic territory. Here, royal penguins breed on an island that lies far from the Australian mainland. It is a distinct destination within the wider region, sharing the Southern Ocean’s abundance of seabirds and marine wildlife.
