Country Club Casual, or elegant resort wear, is appropriate dress for all evenings aboard The Paul Gauguin. Country Club Casual consists of a dress, or skirt or slacks with a blouse or sweater for ladies, and slacks and collared shirts for gentleman. No ties are required at any time, although gentlemen may opt to wear a jacket to the Captain’s Welcome Reception. Please note that casual wear such as shorts, t-shirts, casual jeans (frayed and/or with holes), baseball caps, flip-flops, and Crocs are not considered appropriate after 6:00 pm in all restaurants and lounges. *Shoes suitable for wearing in the water—whether they are reef shoes, sneakers, or old sandals—are imperative for water-based activities. There are corals, urchins, and other marine life that can cause painful cuts and injuries that can be prevented by bringing footwear from home. There is limited opportunity for purchase in the South Pacific. Note that flip-flops are not suitable for this function.

Diving & initiation dive
Supervision of the dives
Your dives will be led by your PONANT instructor. He will take care of your safety and that all goes smoothly. On some diving sites, as in natural reserves or if the local regulations require it, a local guide will escort the diving.
Level required for scuba diving on this cruise
The minimum level required for scuba diving on this cruise is 1 star CMAS or the PADI Open Water Diver (or equivalent). The certification card, the diving log book and a recent medical certificate (less than 12 months) must be presented at the beginning of the cruise to our main diving instructor.
Process of the dives (certified divers)
The instructor reserves the right to check divers’ ability for maximum safety. As we will dive in remote places, the dives will be done without decompression stop. A safety stop of 3 minutes at 5 metres will be mandatory. The depth that can be reached will depend on the certification of the divers:
- For those with PADI Open Water Diver certificate (or equivalent), the maximum depth can be up to 20 metres.
- If two Stars CMAS or PADI Advanced Open Water Divers (or equivalent) wish to dive together independently, they must have a briefing first. They must have dive computers and are allowed to go to a maximum depth of 20 metres.
Process of the initiation dives (novice divers)
Before your initiation dive, your instructor will show you the equipment and will explain to you how to communicate underwater using hand gestures and how to breathe through a regulator. Once in the water, equipped with your material, you will learn how to breathe through your regulator on the surface for a couple of minutes. When your instructor feels you are ready, he will immerse you in water for about 20 minutes to a depth of 6 metres maximum.
Duration of the dives
The diving activity lasts from 2 to 3 hours, which includes the journey to the diving site and the diving. This duration may vary according to the site, the level of divers, weather conditions and the number of participants. For experienced divers, the duration of dives varies between 35 and 60 minutes depending on the site, the diver’s experience and consumption.

Mask and snorkel: for health reasons due to Covid-19, we strongly recommend that you come on board with your own mask and snorkel .As an exception, you will be able to borrow them in accordance with sanitary conditions.
The passenger may participate in scuba diving activities, subject to compliance with certain conditions established in accordance with the health, scientific and medical measures applicable on the day of the dive.

Fauna and flora of the Pacific Ocean
The fauna of the Pacific Sea is very varied. During the various dives, divers can observe various species of benthic fauna such as napoleon fish, raccoon butterfly fish, and pelagic fauna such as manta rays, gray reef sharks, dolphin fish as well as endemic wildlife such as different soft corals.

Moana Explorer Program
Welcome to our young explorers! Offered in partnership with Te mana o te moana, a South Pacific marine education and conservation foundation, this exciting onboard program invites children and teens, ages 7-15, to participate in a range of hands-on, interactive learning experiences to discover and appreciate the value of the natural wonders of French Polynesia.
Every day of the voyage, there will be a combination of naturalist-led island and/or beach excursions, science activities, crafts, games, and other adventures. Depending on the itinerary, your children might learn about marine life through board games, craft natural jewellery, conduct water experiments, embark on a treasure hunt, play water games in the onboard pool, go stargazing, design their own Polynesian tattoo, and more.

A secluded atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago, Rangiroa, meaning “vast sky” in Polynesian, is very aptly named. The lagoon of the largest atoll in Polynesia is reminiscent of the heavens, imprisoned by hundreds of islets formed by sand that veers from immaculate white to pink. But the beauty of Rangiroa, classed by Captain Cousteau as one of the most beautiful diving spots in the world, is most evident in its underwater life: you will have the occasion of admiring all the richness of the site on a snorkeling tour or on a glass-bottom boat tour. Rangiroa is also the high seat of Polynesian pearl culture.

Located on Tahuata, the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands, the village of Hapatoni will open its doors to you. A road built in old stones will lead you from the seashore to the village cathedral. You will also find a craft centre presenting various sculptures and engravings in bone or wood. Marquesan art is, in fact, recognised all over French Polynesia. Further on, vegetation takes over, inviting you to walk among its beautiful green valleys. Here, the population will give you a proper welcome, with traditional singing and dancing. A moment of conviviality you’ll remember!

Your ship will take you to Omoa, a peaceful fishing village far from all civilisation, nestling in a magnificent bay on the island of Fatu Hiva. In the valley, you will be able to spot some tohua, former sacred sites, as well as the many burial caves lost in the island’s abundant tropical forest. During your port of call, you’ll be able to discover the Maison Grelet, a museum that houses remarkable wooden sculptures and local works of art. Right in front of you, the village’s artisans will demonstrate how they make tapa, a bark cloth obtained through the technique of beating layers of wood, and explain the manufacturing processes of umu hei, a bouquet garni made from a delicious mix of fragrances.

Here, like across the entire island, the inhabitants live primarily off fishing, farming and crafts: their wooden and stone sculptures are renowned.

Taiohae Bay welcomes you in a sumptuous setting. Your ship will drop anchor a few kilometres from the black sandy beaches, nestled between majestic valleys. You will find yourself in the middle of the main village on the island of Nuku Hiva. You can follow the footpaths on foot or in an all-terrain vehicle. From the top of the hill of Mount Muake, a breathtaking panorama allows you to clearly identify the rocky islands that emerge on either side of the bay. Further on, the site of Piki Vehine shows its tikis, sacred statues used for religious practices. In addition, do not miss the Notre Dame des Marquises cathedral. Its distinguishing feature is that is was built using stone taken from the six Marquesa Islands.

Listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Fakarava’s coral ellipsis is a narrow stretch of land sitting on a crystal-clear sea. Travellers here are surprised by the immensity of the lagoon, whose colours evoke an infinite palette. The atoll, renowned for its immaculate beaches and preserved nature, is home to rare bird species, plants and crustaceans. You’ll disembark in front of the Veke Veke guesthouse, where you will be welcomed with garlands of flowers and traditional music. You will then be able to go for a walk along the beach or put on flippers, mask and snorkel to make the most of the warm waters of Fakarava and observe its brightly coloured coral.

Glass-bottom boat
Get acquainted with the coral gardens and tropical fish of Rangiroa during this scenic glass-bottom boat tour. Depart the pier aboard a glass-bottom boat, then slowly float over the huge coral heads that cluster in shallow areas inside the Tiputa Channel.
Along the way, you will see a colourful world full of parrot fish, butterfly fish, and surgeon fish through the large windows. You may also encounter black-tipped sharks, and catch a glimpse of the majestic Napoleon fish. During the tour, your Polynesian boat crew will attract the fish directly under the glass panels to make it easy for you to observe and photography them.
A cover will provide protection from the sun and eliminate glare, enabling you to take home great photographs.
Following your tour, you will be transferred back to the pier.

Explore Rangiroa's black pearl industry and learn about pearl cultivation during this memorable visit to the Black Pearl Farm.
Depart the pier for a ride along Rangiroa's main road, past the airport and on to the Black Pearl Farm. Most pearl farms are small-sized, and the number of workers at this farm is quite representative of the farms in this region.
Upon arrival at the farm, the staff will give you a brief lecture about the farming and production of black pearls. You will learn about the chronology and evolution of the industry, and how oysters are selected, grown, and then grafted for production.
Following the lecture, you will proceed to the work sheds where oysters are sorted and cleaned, and watch a grafter at work as he skilfully plies his trade.
Following your visit, you will reboard your minivan for the return ride to the pier.

Rangiroa’s spectacular and diverse marine life is yours to discover during this scenic and memorable ride in the Tuamotu Islands.
Depart the pier via local boat for the ride to Motu Nui Nui, a natural, open-water aquarium renowned for its marine life. Upon arrival, you will receive your safety instructions, then enter the water to explore your surroundings.
Along the way, you will observe an abundance of colourful fish and coral and marine life. Your guide will offer assistance in the water and throughout the tour.
During the tour, you will also have an opportunity to hand-feed the fish. Following your snorkelling session, you will be transferred back to the pier.

Discover the charm of the Marquesan wilderness on a visit to the island of Tahuata, accompanied by your on-board lecturer in anthropology and archaeology.
Boarding an all-terrain vehicle in the village of Hapatoni, you will make your way to the village of Vaitahu, where you will learn about the island’s history during a visit the small museum located at city hall. You will also visit the old church en route to a spectacular scenic lookout, where you will be surrounded by magnificent mountain peaks piercing the sky.

As this tour involves travel over uneven terrain, it is not recommended for guests with back and/or neck problems. This tour involves very little walking. Guests are encouraged to wear insect repellent to ward off small beach mosquitoes (nonos). Each vehicle will accommodate four guests. Omoa petroglyphs walk
Set in a luscious native forest within a picturesque valley is an ancient ceremonial site where Marquesans prayed to their gods to provide abundant water for their crops. Trekking up to the site you will pass an old chief's paepae upon which is a small tiki carved in the famous ke'etu stone of the islands.
Ascending inland you will see a number of sites whose functions will be explained to you by your on-board lecturer in anthropology and archaeology, Mark Eddowes. Finally, you will arrive on the crest of a ridge featuring important petroglyphs, or rock art. The images depict anthropomorphic images of men, concentric circle eyes of magical tikis and even an ancient sailing canoe. However, the most impressive petroglyph and one of the largest in the Marquesas is that of the famous paoa, which looks like a huge tuna fish, carved into the rock.
See also the grinding, polishing and sharpening stones used in ancestral working of adzes and other tools. Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding the site as sharp mountain peaks pierce the sky. This excursion provides a wonderful chance to visit the interior of Fatu Hiva's beautiful Omoa Valley.

Fatu Hiva, the most remote island of the inhabited Marquesan islands offers green and lush vegetation with sheer, rocky landscapes. There are only two villages on the island connected by one road (17 km). The scenic 4x4 ride from Omoa to Hanavave offers numerous photo opportunities over dramatic landscapes, coastline and deep gorges and valleys.
On arrival in Hanavave you will have some free time to stretch your legs and explore the village and take more photos of one of the most picturesque locations in the Marquesas, the iconic Bay of Virgins. The bay was named by Catholic missionaries, who said that the phallic shaped stone outcrops were formed as veiled virgins.

From Hakahetau to Hakahau
Recognizable by its famous peaks, set off to discover Ua Pou during this 4WD adventure. You will visit the North Coast and stop at the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints such as Hakanahinui Bay, also called Shark Bay, the Donkey Plateau, overlooking the legendary Ua Pou airport and the main Hakahetau village.
Your guide will comment on each stop and show you around Hakahau, its church, its port and its craft center. This last stop will allow you to meet the island's artisans who will have traveled from other valleys early in the morning. You will discover the specialty of the island: flowered stone, its real name Phonolite with garnets. Among the 'umete' (bowls), sculptures and tiki in flowered stones of all sizes, you can also find penu (pillons) with a contemporary shape or even seed necklaces, pandanus hats...

Departing from the Hakahetau wharf, accompanied by your guide, take the trail to the Vaiea waterfall through dense forest shaded by fruit trees.The Vaiea waterfall is a half-hour's walk from the village of Hakahetau, stopping at the Te Tahuna site for a short visit.
The walk continues on a shaded track with a slight gradient. The last part of the trail is made up and follows the watercourse for 300 m before arriving at a magnificent basin opening onto a lush landscape. The waterfall is on a human scale, falling some ten meters, the water is refreshing and the vegetation exuberant.

Visit of Taipivai valley
Nuku Hiva’s spectacular beauty is yours to discover during this off-road adventure in the Taipivai Valley.
Depart the pier for the ride to the Taipivai Valley, one of the richest archaeological sites in the Marquesas Islands. The Taipivai Valley is a location made famous by the American writer and former sailor, Herman Melville (1819-1891), who deserted his ship and hid in this valley. Captured by indigenous natives, he lived in the Taipivai Valley for three weeks, a period during which he observed their way of life. This experience was the inspiration for his first novel. En route to the Taipivai Valley, you will ride through the island’s interior along a steep trail lined with lush flora and vegetation, then traverse exquisite mountain terrain.
Along the way, you will enjoy many opportunities to take magnificent photographs, as you stop several times to take in spectacular vistas of the coastline, bays, and valleys. At one particular stop, you will see your ship anchored in the Bay of Taihoae. Next, you will drive through Taipivai’s small agricultural villages, then proceed to a long stretch of beach at the end of the village. Here, you will stop again to admire splendid vistas of the valley and surrounding mountains.
Following your visit, you will re-board your off-road vehicle for the return ride to the pier.

The lagoon tour includes three stops. Depart the pier in Vaitape (or Anau) aboard an outrigger canoe for a scenic ride in the Bora Bora lagoon (weather permitting). You will then continue to the Lagoonarium, with its white sandy beach and open-air aquarium. From the beach you will have a magnificent view of the island of Bora Bora. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life, including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Your local guides will show you how to carefully approach the marine life, will present you the motu and you will invite to participate in weaving coconut palm, sheathing coconut and pareo demonstrations.

Because the outrigger canoes are not always uncovered, the ride can be extremely sunny or wet from spray or rain. At times transfer is by car and boat. Explore the island paradise of Bora Bora during this scenic orientation tour via Le truck. For a long time, this picturesque mode of transport has been the emblematic means of transport in Polynesia, especially on the Society Islands.
Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna's to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. You will also have an opportunity to buy some local, hand-painted pareos. From a lookout point, you will see Mount Otemanu, Bora Bora's highest peak, which stands as a silent sentinel over the Pearl of the Pacific.

Depart the pier for the brief water-taxi ride to your comfortable motorized dive boat. After embarking the dive boat, your certified diving instructor will explain your safety and diving instructions and help you put on your helmet. Your head will remain dry inside the helmet; you can even wear your glasses as you freely maneuverer about in total security just a few feet below the surface. You will then descend the ladder into the crystal-clear water and commence your 30-minute underwater adventure. As you walk along the sandy bottom past exotic coral formations, you will see an abundance of iridescently colored tropical fish that are gentle enough to feed by hand.
Plastic shoes, wet suits, masks, and snorkels will also be available, as there will be time for snorkeling while the other guests take their underwater walk.

The lagoon tour includes three stops. The first one is for snorkeling in a coral garden, where visitors can discover many different colorful fish, corals, and many other inhabitants of a wonderful natural ecosystem. The guide accompanies the visitors in the water. The second stop is the visit of the stingrays in shallow water. These rays are tamed since more than 20 years. The approach is gentle and respectful, keeping in mind preservation of nature. The last stop is on the ocean side, for the observation of black tip reef sharks.
After the morning of snorkeling, Polynesian feast is served on a private island (motu). Lunch is cooked in a traditional earth oven made with volcanic rocks, and covered by banana leaves. Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Depart the ship by covered motorized boat for a 15-minute ride along the west coast of Taha'a.
Upon arrival, you will disembark the boat for a guided walk across an uninhabited islet, or motu, located just off the coast. After reaching the other side of the motu, you will commence your snorkeling session. Your guide will lead you as the current carries you through the shallow lagoon on the way back to the boat. The drift can be moderate to strenuous depending on the strength of the current. The drift is done in a single line with one snorkeling guide leading the 12 snorkeller spaced 10 feet apart and one snorkelling guide closing up on the group. This area abounds with a spectacular variety of tropical fish and amazing coral.
Upon returning to the boat, refreshments and additional snorkelling time will be made available before you are transferred back to Motu Mahana.

The lagoon tour includes three stops. The first one is for snorkeling in a coral garden, where visitors can discover many different colorful fish, corals, and many other inhabitants of a wonderful natural ecosystem. The guide accompanies the visitors in the water. The second stop is the visit of the stingrays in shallow water. These rays are tamed since more than 20 years. The approach is gentle and respectful, keeping in mind preservation of nature. The last stop is on the ocean side, for the observation of black tip reef sharks.
After the morning of snorkeling, Polynesian feast is served on a private island (motu). Lunch is cooked in a traditional earth oven made with volcanic rocks, and covered by banana leaves. The guests watch the opening of the oven, and listen to the explanations of the guide. The table is set in the lagoon, with an umbrella to protect guests from the sun. Depart the pier in Bora-Bora via motorboat for the brief transfer to the hydraulic scooter platform. Upon arrival, you will meet your dive instructor/guide, who will brief you on the scooter, equipment, and safety procedures. Operating the scooter is very simple; riders only need to step onto the scooter and steer it using a small wheel. The Aquabike underwater scooter is equipped with dive tanks, providing continuous airflow, so your head stays completely dry. After descending to a shallow depth of 10 feet (3 meters) maximum, your 30-minute underwater exploration will begin. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life, including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna's to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for a journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island's deepest valley. Moorea, Polynesian's Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives students from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Your guide will then drive you across a large plantation filled with vanilla, bananas, grapefruits, and oranges, and will acquaint you with the island's diverse flora and fauna. Next, you will continue to an open-air temple, or marae.

From July through October humpback whales come to Moorea's waters to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves.
Dr. Michael Poole's team will take you on this exciting and educational boat-based eco-tour where you can observe humpback whales in their natural environment, the ocean. If conditions are favorable (a calm sea; calm whale behavior) and participants who are strong snorkeler, then you may also snorkel in the water to observe the whales. You can also bask in the dramatic beauty of Moorea and learn about its geology.
Whales are found during 95% of these tours, and you may also see schools of dolphins. The primary objective will be to find and observe humpback whales, and if possible, to slip into the water to observe them underwater.
Getting into the water is not obligatory or always possible, so people who simply want to observe whales from the boat are also welcome. In February 2019 Dr. Poole and his research and conservation efforts on humpback whales were featured on Animal Planet and ABC TV. His team operates with the utmost respect in the presence of these incredible giants. Depart the pier for the drive to the Intercontinental Moorea Resort & Spa. Upon arrival, you will meet your instructor, then be outfitted with your wet suit and water shoes before embarking on a 10-minute boat ride inside the majestic lagoon of Moorea. The crew will anchor the boat off the coast of Motu Fareone or inside the lagoon in Papetoai (depending on sea and weather conditions). Your certified diving instructor will explain your safety and diving instructions, help you put on your helmet, and assist you with descending the ladder into the crystal-clear water.
You will then commence your 30-minute underwater adventure at a depth of 12 feet. Along the way, you will see an abundance of fish that include triggerfish, butterfly fish, groupers, and parrotfish, swimming amid beautiful coral heads. Stingrays are also plentiful at this dive spot. While your guide feeds them, you will be able to take a closer look at these unusual ocean denizens.

Explore Moorea's beauty from above and below the water during this relaxing sailing and snorkeling excursion aboard a catamaran.
Depart the pier aboard the beautiful, 43-foot catamaran, and sail to Moorea's northern coast, then on to a pair of French Polynesian's most beautiful bays: Cook's and Opunohu. En route, you can sit back and relax, or savor a fruit juice under the canopy astern. Upon reaching Opunohu Bay, the captain will drop anchor in the clear blue waters of the lagoon. After receiving your safety and snorkeling instructions, you will have the chance to discover the underwater tiki place and the marine life residing there, including coral formations and reef fish.

Go for an authentic, small-group cruise on the island of Moorea to discover the marine fauna of its lagoon.
You will first sail into Opunohu or Cook Bay in search of spinner dolphins which generally follow the coasts. A first snorkeling stop is then planned on a shallow sandbank in the lagoon to meet stingrays and blacktip sharks. This activity is accessible to all ages without any particular physical aptitude. A second snorkeling stop will take place at the coral canyon. In this unique place, you can let yourself drift with the current into slightly deeper waters. It is recommended to know how to swim and to use snorkeling equipment (fins, mask and snorkel), however, for those who wish, it is always possible to stay in the boat to observe green turtles and other species of fish multi-colored. Lagoon tour of Bora Bora in a traditional outrigger canoe (motorized), with ukulele animation and narration on culture, history and nature of Bora Bora.
The lagoon tour includes three stops. The first one is for snorkeling in a coral garden, where visitors can discover many different colorful fish, corals, and many other inhabitants of a wonderful natural ecosystem. The guide accompanies the visitors in the water. The second stop is the visit of the stingrays in shallow water. These rays are tamed since more than 20 years. The approach is gentle and respectful, keeping in mind preservation of nature. The last stop is on the ocean side, for the observation of black tip reef sharks.
After the morning of snorkeling, Polynesian feast is served on a private island (motu). Lunch is cooked in a traditional earth oven made with volcanic rocks, and covered by banana leaves. The guests watch the opening of the oven, and listen to the explanations of the guide. The table is set in the lagoon, with an umbrella to protect guests from the sun. On the menu: suckling pig, chicken with local spinach, manioc, plantain bananas, bread fruit, raw fish salad with coconut milk, and finally a traditional dessert made with bananas and vanilla, as well as fresh tropical fruits. They will ensure that your dives are conducted smoothly and safely: supervision of four certified divers at a time, evaluation of diving skills and experience, adherence to safety stops, zones and the maximum depth authorised.

Get acquainted with the coral gardens and tropical fish of Rangiroa during this scenic glass-bottom boat tour. Depart the pier aboard a glass-bottom boat, then slowly float over the huge coral heads that cluster in shallow areas inside the Tiputa Channel.

Explore Rangiroa's black pearl industry and learn about pearl cultivation during this memorable visit to the Black Pearl Farm.
Depart the pier for a ride along Rangiroa's main road, past the airport and on to the Black Pearl Farm. Most pearl farms are small-sized, and the number of workers at this farm is quite representative of the farms in this region.
Upon arrival at the farm, the staff will give you a brief lecture about the farming and production of black pearls. You will learn about the chronology and evolution of the industry, and how oysters are selected, grown, and then grafted for production.
Following the lecture, you will proceed to the work sheds where oysters are sorted and cleaned, and watch a grafter at work as he skilfully plies his trade.

Omoa petroglyphs walk
Set in a luscious native forest within a picturesque valley is an ancient ceremonial site where Marquesans prayed to their gods to provide abundant water for their crops. Trekking up to the site you will pass an old chief's paepae upon which is a small tiki carved in the famous ke'etu stone of the islands.
Ascending inland you will see a number of sites whose functions will be explained to you by your on-board lecturer in anthropology and archaeology, Mark Eddowes. Finally, you will arrive on the crest of a ridge featuring important petroglyphs, or rock art. The images depict anthropomorphic images of men, concentric circle eyes of magical tikis and even an ancient sailing canoe. However, the most impressive petroglyph and one of the largest in the Marquesas is that of the famous paoa, which looks like a huge tuna fish, carved into the rock.
See also the grinding, polishing and sharpening stones used in ancestral working of adzes and other tools. Enjoy the magnificent scenery surrounding the site as sharp mountain peaks pierce the sky. This excursion provides a wonderful chance to visit the interior of Fatu Hiva's beautiful Omoa Valley.

Fatu Hiva, the most remote island of the inhabited Marquesan islands offers green and lush vegetation with sheer, rocky landscapes. There are only two villages on the island connected by one road (17 km). The scenic 4x4 ride from Omoa to Hanavave offers numerous photo opportunities over dramatic landscapes, coastline and deep gorges and valleys.
On arrival in Hanavave you will have some free time to stretch your legs and explore the village and take more photos of one of the most picturesque locations in the Marquesas, the iconic Bay of Virgins. The bay was named by Catholic missionaries, who said that the phallic shaped stone outcrops were formed as veiled virgins.

From Hakahetau to Hakahau
Recognizable by its famous peaks, set off to discover Ua Pou during this 4WD adventure. You will visit the North Coast and stop at the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints such as Hakanahinui Bay, also called Shark Bay, the Donkey Plateau, overlooking the legendary Ua Pou airport and the main Hakahetau village.
Your guide will comment on each stop and show you around Hakahau, its church, its port and its craft center. This last stop will allow you to meet the island's artisans who will have traveled from other valleys early in the morning. You will discover the specialty of the island: flowered stone, its real name Phonolite with garnets. Among the 'umete' (bowls), sculptures and tiki in flowered stones of all sizes, you can also find penu (pillons) with a contemporary shape or even seed necklaces, pandanus hats...
The visit will end with the sound of the ukulele, a guitar that your driver will play as a thank you for your coming and the time to take the same route back to Hakahetau Bay. Let yourself be won over by the simplicity and authenticity of this magnificent island.

Departing from the Hakahetau wharf, accompanied by your guide, take the trail to the Vaiea waterfall through dense forest shaded by fruit trees.The Vaiea waterfall is a half-hour's walk from the village of Hakahetau, stopping at the Te Tahuna site for a short visit.
The walk continues on a shaded track with a slight gradient. The last part of the trail is made up and follows the watercourse for 300 m before arriving at a magnificent basin opening onto a lush landscape. The waterfall is on a human scale, falling some ten meters, the water is refreshing and the vegetation exuberant.

Visit of Taipivai valley
Nuku Hiva’s spectacular beauty is yours to discover during this off-road adventure in the Taipivai Valley.
Depart the pier for the ride to the Taipivai Valley, one of the richest archaeological sites in the Marquesas Islands. The Taipivai Valley is a location made famous by the American writer and former sailor, Herman Melville (1819-1891), who deserted his ship and hid in this valley. Captured by indigenous natives, he lived in the Taipivai Valley for three weeks, a period during which he observed their way of life. This experience was the inspiration for his first novel. En route to the Taipivai Valley, you will ride through the island’s interior along a steep trail lined with lush flora and vegetation, then traverse exquisite mountain terrain.
Along the way, you will enjoy many opportunities to take magnificent photographs, as you stop several times to take in spectacular vistas of the coastline, bays, and valleys. At one particular stop, you will see your ship anchored in the Bay of Taihoae. Next, you will drive through Taipivai’s small agricultural villages, then proceed to a long stretch of beach at the end of the village. Here, you will stop again to admire splendid vistas of the valley and surrounding mountains.
Following your visit, you will re-board your off-road vehicle for the return ride to the pier.

Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life, including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Explore the island paradise of Bora Bora during this scenic orientation tour via Le truck. For a long time, this picturesque mode of transport has been the emblematic means of transport in Polynesia, especially on the Society Islands.
Depart the pier aboard a Le truck. First, you will drive through the district of Fa'anui. Along the way, you will pass by small villages and fields that offer a glimpse into the everyday life of the people of Bora Bora. A brief stop will be made at Fa'anui Bay for photographs of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia.
Your drive will continue on to the ancient ceremonial site of Fa'anui Marae, followed by a look at the bunkers constructed by American GIs during WWII. Next, a stop will be made at Mama Edna's to sample such local delicacies as breadfruit, poe mixed with coconut milk (not marinated), taro and tropical fruit. On the menu: suckling pig, chicken with local spinach, manioc, plantain bananas, bread fruit, raw fish salad with coconut milk, and finally a traditional dessert made with bananas and vanilla, as well as fresh tropical fruits. Shark & ray watching by glass bottom boat
Get acquainted with sharks and rays in a unique new way during a glass-bottom boat ride in Bora Bora and a swim with stingrays.
After embarking your glass-bottom boat at the pier, you will depart for a brief cruise. Your guide will then tie the boat to a mooring in about 25 feet of water and try to attract black-tipped sharks. You will observe the dance of these ocean denizens and, if you are lucky, spot some lemon sharks known to frequent the area. Next, you will proceed to a shallower, clear lagoon for a rare opportunity to view graceful stingrays and even swim alongside them.

Depart the ship by covered motorized boat for a 15-minute ride along the west coast of Taha'a.
Upon arrival, you will disembark the boat for a guided walk across an uninhabited islet, or motu, located just off the coast. After reaching the other side of the motu, you will commence your snorkeling session. Your guide will lead you as the current carries you through the shallow lagoon on the way back to the boat. The drift can be moderate to strenuous depending on the strength of the current. The drift is done in a single line with one snorkeling guide leading the 12 snorkeller spaced 10 feet apart and one snorkelling guide closing up on the group. This area abounds with a spectacular variety of tropical fish and amazing coral.
Upon returning to the boat, refreshments and additional snorkelling time will be made available before you are transferred back to Motu Mahana.

Depart the pier in Bora-Bora via motorboat for the brief transfer to the hydraulic scooter platform. Upon arrival, you will meet your dive instructor/guide, who will brief you on the scooter, equipment, and safety procedures. Operating the scooter is very simple; riders only need to step onto the scooter and steer it using a small wheel. The Aquabike underwater scooter is equipped with dive tanks, providing continuous airflow, so your head stays completely dry. Depart the pier in an off-road vehicle for a journey inside the volcanic crater from which Moorea was created. En route, you will discover the heart of a huge pineapple plantation inside the island's deepest valley. Moorea, Polynesian's Green Garden, is renowned for its Agricultural School, which receives students from all the outer islands. A stop will be made here to sample some homemade jam. Ice cream and local fruit juices will also be available for purchase.
Your guide will then drive you across a large plantation filled with vanilla, bananas, grapefruits, and oranges, and will acquaint you with the island's diverse flora and fauna. Next, you will continue to an open-air temple, or marae.

From July through October humpback whales come to Moorea's waters to rest, mate, give birth, and nurse their calves.
Dr. Michael Poole's team will take you on this exciting and educational boat-based eco-tour where you can observe humpback whales in their natural environment, the ocean. If conditions are favorable (a calm sea; calm whale behavior) and participants who are strong snorkeler, then you may also snorkel in the water to observe the whales. You can also bask in the dramatic beauty of Moorea and learn about its geology.
Whales are found during 95% of these tours, and you may also see schools of dolphins. The primary objective will be to find and observe humpback whales, and if possible, to slip into the water to observe them underwater.
Getting into the water is not obligatory or always possible, so people who simply want to observe whales from the boat are also welcome. In February 2019 Dr. Poole and his research and conservation efforts on humpback whales were featured on Animal Planet and ABC TV. His team operates with the utmost respect in the presence of these incredible giants. A guarantee cannot be given that whales will be found nor that it will be possible to get into the water, but the team will do their best.

Go for an authentic, small-group cruise on the island of Moorea to discover the marine fauna of its lagoon.
You will first sail into Opunohu or Cook Bay in search of spinner dolphins which generally follow the coasts. A first snorkeling stop is then planned on a shallow sandbank in the lagoon to meet stingrays and blacktip sharks. This activity is accessible to all ages without any particular physical aptitude. A second snorkeling stop will take place at the coral canyon. In this unique place, you can let yourself drift with the current into slightly deeper waters. It is recommended to know how to swim and to use snorkeling equipment (fins, mask and snorkel), however, for those who wish, it is always possible to stay in the boat to observe green turtles and other species of fish multi-colored. Day 2 & 3 – Moorea

Day 4 – Moorea/Papeete
Check out after an included breakfast and you will be transferred to the port of Moorea, to embark on a ferry to Papeete. Upon arriving in Tahiti, a local representative will assist you in transporting you to your Day Room at the Hilton Tahiti 4*.
Check-in and then relax in your room or take advantage of the resort’s amenities.
The Hilton Tahiti offers an ideal location, overlooking Moorea Island and close to the city centre. The elegant rooms are light and equipped with contemporary furniture for a warm and comfortable ambience. The hotel features a large outdoor pool, six bars and restaurants, a fitness centre and a spa.

Check-in and then relax in your room or take advantage of the resort’s amenities. Located on a vibrant blue lagoon, the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa is the ideal base to relax as you transition from vacation to your journey home.
