PONANT is the first cruise company to take you to the heart of the sublime landscapes of the tropical islands in southern Japan during an expedition cruise. On this 8-day itinerary aboard Le Jacques-Cartier from Taiwan to Kagoshima, you will discover the rich natural heritage, traditional villages and craft of the Okinawa and Yaeyama Islands, in the Ryukyu archipelago.
As you depart from the Port of Keelung, in Taipei, the capital of the lush island of Taiwan, you will set sail for the southern islands of Japan, including Ishigaki, the capital island of the Yaeyama Islands. In the heart of the magnificent Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park, you will be able to enjoy the dynamic atmosphere of the eponymous city or discover Kabira Bay, renowned for its idyllic scenery, combining crystal-clear turquoise water and beaches of white sand.
Following a port of call in the picturesque village of Taketomijima, with its traditional Okinawan dwellings and its idyllic sandy expanses, Le Jacques-Cartier will sail south to the island of Iriomotejima. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this little corner of paradise will enchant you with its authentic and preserved character, with its wild beaches lying alongside traditional villages surrounded by luxurious tropical forest: jungle, mangrove, rivers, waterfalls. This unique biodiversity is made up of many endemic species.
You will then head for Kumejima, the island that linked Okinawa to China in the past. Famous for its ‘Eisa’, a form of folk dance performed to the rhythm of traditional drums, this multifaceted island will reveal itself through its natural treasures: the mythical Mifuga rock formation or the idyllic beach of Hatenohama, a point of reference for fans of the underwater world. You will also call at Iheya Island, Okinawa’s northernmost territory, where the traditional culture of the region is preserved. You will be able to discover a few aspects of this through a traditional “Eisa” show featuring traditional drums.
Le Jacques Cartier will make its way to the island of Amamioshima, between Kyushu and Okinawa. You will fall in love with this island surrounded by stunning coral reefs, punctuated with verdant peaks, covered in primary forest and monumental mangroves, and boasting strong Okinawan influences.
Next, you will set sail south to the captivating, mountainous island of Yakushima, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. Providing an unspoiled natural setting for endemic species such as the Yakushima monkey and deer, the island is home to an exceptional natural environment featuring forests of ancient cedars, bewitching waterfalls, and majestic peaks.
For the grand finale, your cruise will draw to an end in Kagoshima, a bustling city nestling between ancient forests and majestic volcanoes.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landings"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.
Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.
Travelling to isolated regions is an exhilarating experience. In remote areas, please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

On the north-east tip of Taiwan, the harbour city of Keelung stands on one of the most beautiful coasts on the island. Nearby is the spectacular natural park of Yehliu, famed for its striking rock formations. It's easy to tour the city's historical sites on trails that cross the lush green hills surrounding the harbour from Chung Cheng Park to Fort Ershawan, you can enjoy superb views of Keelung and the coastline. But the main attraction is the Miaokou night market, where you can taste some typically Taiwanese culinary delights.
Arrival 14/4/2024
Departure 14/4/2024
Located to the south of the main island of the Yaeyama archipelago, Ishigaki boasts all the aspects of an authentic piece of paradise. You have guessed it, you do not come here for its skyscrapers but for its pure emerald waters and idyllic beaches. The waters off Shiraho, on the island's south-west coast, have one of the largest areas of blue coral in the world.
Arrival 14/4/2024
Departure 14/4/2024
Off the coast of the Okinawa Prefecture, Taketomi Island (Taketomijima) is fascinating for its traditional character, preserved in a beautiful, lush setting. Like its big sisters, Ishigaki and Kuroshima, this island in the Yaeyama archipelago is the ideal destination for an immersion in typical landscapes and the insular way of life of the former Ryukyu Kingdom. Here, time seems to have stood still. There are very few cars about; bicycles and carriages drawn by imposing oxen remain the only means of transport. This is an ideal opportunity to wander through the picturesque streets lined with traditional dwellings with red-tiled roofs and lion-shaped shisa statues placed in front of the vast majority of houses to keep evil spirits at bay.
Arrival 15/4/2024
Departure 15/4/2024
Nestled in the very heart of the Yaeyama archipelago, Iriomote Island conjures visions of a hidden paradise. With 90% of the island covered by thick jungle, crossed by rivers and impressive mangrove forests, Iriomote is an ideal destination for fans of large preserved spaces. With exceptional fauna and flora, this lush jewel is home to many endemic species: you may be lucky enough to get to glimpse an Iriomote cat or a crested serpent eagle. During this port of call, you will also have the possibility of admiring the captivating underwater world during a free diving session or contemplating this lush jungle close up on a cruise along the calm waters of the island’s rivers.
Arrival 16/4/2024
Departure 16/4/2024
Located 90 km (56 miles) to the south-west of Okinawa Honto, Kumejima is a multifaceted island home to natural treasures. Hatenohama, a stunning 7 km-long (4.3 miles) fine-sand beach, promises wonderful carefree moments discovering the exceptional underwater worlds off the coast of Kumejima. Mifuga, a rock formation on the north coast of the island with a hole right through its middle, is a great example of the erosion along the coast. The eastern peninsula offers another geological feature, visible at low tide: 1,000 flat rocks each around one metre (3.2 feet) in diameter, formed by the contraction of lava from a nearby eruption a million years ago. They create a rocky plateau resembling a traditional Japanese tatami, hence the name Tatami-ishi.
Arrival 17/4/2024
Departure 17/4/2024
The northernmost island of the prefecture of Okinawa, Iheyajima is a small territory that will take you back in time. At the heart of preserved natural landscapes that are a reminder of the Okinawa of the past, the inhabitants perpetuate traditional culture, particularly by maintaining ancient rites and ceremonies in honour of the divinities of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The island is home to several historic sites, such as the tomb of the ancestors of King Sho Hashi, the unifier of Okinawa and founder of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which was independent from Japan until the end of the 19th century. In this natural setting, whose emblematic Nento-Hiramatsu pine tree is a national monument, perhaps you will enjoy the privilege of seeing a traditional “Eisa” drum performance.
Arrival 18/4/2024
Departure 18/4/2024
Situated in the East China Sea in the Nansei archipelago, a group of islands also known as the Ryuku Islands and lying to the south-west of Japan between Kyūshū and Taiwan, Amami Oshima (literally “Amami Big Island”) is the largest of the Amami Islands. It is influenced by the culture of the great Okinawa archipelago. Amami Oshima is a world apart, with wild and pristine nature in which you will experience the tranquillity of the place. The old-growth forest covers 95% of the island’s surface and can be discovered along hiking trails. Its 700,000 m2 of mangrove, the second largest in Japan, are breathtaking.
Arrival 19/4/2024
Departure 19/4/2024
A splendid sub-tropical, mountainous island listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, Yakushima is one of the most beautiful islands in the Japanese archipelago. Its extensive yakusugi forest contains some of Japanメs oldest living trees ヨ cedars that are over 1000 metres tall and up to 7,000 years old. The Senpiro and Toroki waterfalls, each one several dozens of metres high, are equally impressive. A feast for the eyes.
Arrival 20/4/2024 early morning
Disembarkation 20/4/2024 at 8:00 am
The seaside city of Kagoshima, at the south of Kyushu Island, ᅠis best known for Sakurajima, an active volcano that faces Kinko Bay. A visit to this busy metropolis will remind you just how much the volcano is part of the inhabitants' everyday life: in the wake of the almost daily eruptions, a delicate layer of ash settles on everything. The top of a buried torii (traditional Japanese gate) measuring three metres that was 'swallowed up' by a giant lava flow in 1914 can still be seen. The power of nature will send a shiver down your spine.

Day 2 - Taipei / Shifen & Jiufen / Keelung
After breakfast and check-out, you will depart the hotel in the morning to explore Jiufen & Shifen (about a 50-minute drive from Taipei).
Before 1950, these were both gold and coal mining towns. Today, their authentic old-world atmosphere makes them popular destinations to enjoy a local Taiwanese experience.
Shifen is a small, traditional mountain village with a railway running through it. Its ancient streets are unique and famous, as this is one of the only remaining places in Taiwan where the old houses are so close to the railway tracks. You will get to observe an activity that is typical in Shifen: releasing paper lanterns into the night sky for good luck. The preferred place to enjoy this “sky lantern” experience is right in the middle of the train tracks!
This tradition was invented during the Three Kingdoms period (220-265). Originally, the lanterns were used to communicate military intelligence. In the early 19th century, the Lantern Festival was brought to Taiwan, where annually, at the beginning of the spring planting season, people would release “sky lanterns” into the air as a prayer for the coming year. For many years, the “Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival” has had a brilliant history. In addition to enjoying its reputation as part of the sky lantern tradition in Taiwan, the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival was voted by the Discovery Channel as the second biggest night-time celebration in the world. The sky lanterns carry the prayers and vows of the people; through them, the festival-goers seek the purification of their souls. The festival advertises the Taiwan spirit to the world. The main activity consists of buying lanterns and writing wishes, dreams, and prayers on them for the coming year, then releasing them into the night sky.
You will then make your way to Jiufen, where you will enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before visiting the old city. This will be followed by free time to stroll along the narrow streets.
It is said that a long time ago there were only nine families in Jiufen. Before the roads were built, all materials were transported via ships, so it became customary to always order nine units of a same item – one for each of the families. Hence the name of the place, Jiu Fen, meaning nine parts. Located on the north-east coast of Taiwan, it used to be the centre of gold mining. The village is built on a mountain side and faces the sea. In 1890, someone struck gold near it. The poor village with only nine families soon attracted 4,000 families of prospectors. Once considered the gold city of Assai and called Little Shanghai or Little Hong Kong, with the decline of gold mining activities Jiufen faded. Later, several movies were shot there, some of them gaining international recognition. For example, The Sad City won first prize at the Venice Film Festival and awakened people's memory of this village.
During your visit, the prosperous old streets and buildings will bring the town’s history to life under your eyes. The place is full of traces of its golden past. Now, there are many unique teahouses in the area. These teahouses are the best stops during your visit to this mountain village. You will also enjoy beautiful views of the Keelung outer sea.
You will then be transferred to the pier of Keelung to embark on board your ship.

Day 2 - Taipei/Kaohsiung
After breakfast and check-out, you will depart the hotel in the morning to stroll down Di-hua Street.
Famous for traditional merchandises like Chinese medicines & dried seafood, it is now mixed with modern cafes and culture-creative shops in the area. Historic Di-hua Street is crammed with photogenic shop houses built in the Baroque style, many dating from the 1920s. Since then, Di-hua Street has become an important centre for commerce and selling traditional Chinese medicine, herbs, dried-food, fabrics, and Taiwanese tea. Visit lively and well-loved Hsia-hai City God Temple, built in 1856, and famous for the Matchmaker (said to have brought together 6,000 couples).
You will then take a ride on the Taipei Observatory's Guinness World Record-breaking high-speed elevator to reach the indoor observation deck located at the 89th floor, where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Taipei metropolitan area. There is also an outdoor observation deck on the 91st floor open for visit, weather permitting.

On arrival, you will head for the Silks Club 5* hotel.
You will check in before retiring to your room to freshen up.
Enjoy a traditional kaiseki dinner, symbol of Japanese gastronomy.
Day 3 – Kaohsiung
Breakfast.
You will first visit the sacred monastery of Fo Guang Shan, Taiwan's main Buddhist center.
Giant Buddha statues welcome you to the Fo Guang Shan Monastery, a one-hour drive from Kaohsiung. Founded in 1967 by the venerable master Hsing Yun, Fo Guang Shan is the best- known Buddhist centre in southern Taiwan and is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. It comprises a complex of meditation halls, shrines and gardens. Tour the Meditation Hall and the Main Shrine.
Continue to the Buddha Memorial Centre, which is built on more than 247 acres. The design of the Buddha Memorial Centre is inspired by both an Indian stupa and the Mahabodhi Temple inside the Bodhgaya religious site in India. Above it sits the world’s tallest bronze sitting Buddha statue. The centre opened in 2011 and was designed to promote cultural and religious education. Four stupas symbolize the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, while the eight Chinese pavilions denote the Eightfold Path. The last remaining of Buddha's teeth is housed in a special shrine within.
Enjoy a vegetarian lunch at the monastery.
After lunch, enjoy a unique sutra calligraphy experience. The Sutra Calligraphy Hall is set up to offer a place for people to cultivate their minds. Sutra calligraphy is a common practice in Buddhism; it is simple, straightforward, and easy to practice. In a peaceful and solemn environment, you can be inspired by transcribing the Diamond Sutra, the Song of the Ten Practices, or the Roots of Wisdom by Ven. According to Master Hsing Yun, in our busy lives, we need to find a space for the mind to settle, and the Sutra Calligraphy Hall provides visitors with a conducive environment to discover inner peace.
After this experience, you will then take a closer look at Taiwanese art, both old and new, on the shores of Lotus Lake. Pagodas, pavilions, and temples here all boast classical architecture, yet the oldest dates back only to 1951. Explore the Spring and Autumn Pavilions dedicated to the God of War. The graceful Dragon and Tiger Pagodas feature interiors decorated with paintings depicting China's 24 Obedient Sons.
The Tzu-Chi Temple is a magnificent Taoist shrine. Completed in the 1970s, it boasts an interior filled with wildly fantastic depictions of the pantheon of Taoist deities.
You will then enjoy a free time to stroll around the Kaohsiung's port district, with its hundreds of boutiques, cafés, artists' studios. The area is home to some of the world's finest street art.
Dinner will be served in a local restaurant where you will sample Cantonese cuisine.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 4 - Kaohsiung/Tainan/Beitou
After breakfast, you will complete check-out formalities of the hotel before departing for Tainan, Taiwan's oldest city.
At the end of the 16th Century, the Dutch East India Company established a trade base here, and Tainan was the island’s capital for more than 200 years.
The prelude to your day will be a visit to the Chikan Towers, the most important historic sites built at the top of the Dutch fort of Provintia.
Elegant gardens and koi ponds surround the two ornate stone towers. A noteworthy landmark here is the Confucius Temple -- the country’s oldest. Built in 1666 at the end of the Manchu Dynasty, the temple served as Taiwan’s first official school. The impressive temple you see today is the result of a 1917 restoration undertaken when Taiwan was part of the Japanese Empire. Check out the graceful banyan trees and two ceremonial gates that symbolize the main disciplines of Confucianism.
You will discover Taiwanese cuisine in a restaurant specializing in the famous Dan Zai noodles for which the company is famous.
After lunch, you will take part in the traditional ceremony of preparing the famous lotus flower tea at Shi-ba-Mao, located in Wu-Family-Garden. The Wu Family Garden is one of the most interesting historical sites in Tainan. From Minquan Road, the first glimpse of the site will be of the Tainan Public Hall building, constructed in a Baroque style. On one side, it blends into the Shi-Ba Mao Teahouse, built in a Japanese wood structure style, and features a classical flower garden built in a Chinese style on another side. Take a leisurely walk to the tea house and experience the unique “Lotus tea ceremony”.
Tainan is renowned for the Lotus flower blossom season, from June to September each year. Lotus flowers are used to brew tea and the seeds can be found in many local dishes. Tea leaves will be wrapped in the lotus flower from the previous night. Guests start the tea ceremony by unwrapping the lotus flower, unlocking the fragrance of the tea infused with the aroma of lotus flower blossoms.
A professional tea master will demonstrate the authentic tea ceremony and teach you how to make a pot of perfect tea. There will be wagashi (Japanese style sweets) served during the tea tasting.
You will then be transferred to Kaohsiung station for your transfer to Beitou by train.
On arrival, you will head for the Grand View Hot Springs Resort 5* hotel.
You will check in before retiring to your room to freshen up.
Your dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant. Enjoy creative and innovative French cuisine.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 5 – Beitou/Taipei
After breakfast, you will complete check-out formalities of the hotel before starting your day in the thermal valley of the hot springs region.
Located beside Beitou Hot Spring Park, Thermal Valley is one of the sources supplying the area’s hot springs. The sulfuric steam that blankets the valley year-round gives the valley a frightening quality, giving rise to nicknames like “Ghost Lake.” The springs here have the highest temperatures of any in the Datunshan volcano group. With its surreal sulfuric atmosphere, it’s no wonder Thermal Valley was considered one of the “12 great sights of Taiwan” during the Period of Japanese Occupation.
You will then stop at the famous National Palace Museum, whose permanent collection houses the world’s largest array of ancient Chinese artefacts and artwork, spanning 8 000 years of Chinese history. Faced with the impending fall of the southern capital of Nanjing to the Chinese Communists in 1948, the Nationalist Kuomintang government shipped their most valuable relics to Taiwan – ultimately saving them from the ravages of mainland China’s destructive Cultural Revolution.
Your buffet lunch will be served at Taipei's famous Grand Hotel, which was built in 1952 in the decadent style of classic Chinese architecture.
After lunch, your day will continue with the Martyr’s temple.
It is the largest example of similar memorials which can be found all over Taiwan, dedicated to about 390 000 civilians and soldiers killed in struggles with the Ching dynasty, the Japanese and the Communists. The hourly changing of the guard ceremonies are extremely elaborate affairs, which last more than 15 minutes and are highly photogenic.
You will then be transferred to the pier of Keelung to embark on board your ship.

Day 1 - Kagoshima
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local English-speaking representative.
You will start your day of visit by taking a local ferry on a short crossing to meet one of Japan's most active volcanoes: Sakurajima. Its first known eruption dates back to the year 708, and since 1955 its activity has been almost permanent, closely monitored by the Japanese authorities who set up a state-of-the-art observatory in 1978. Lava flows from fissures in the volcano's flanks gave rise to the peninsula, which is now linked to the island of Kyushu.
You will stop at the Sakurajima Visitor Centre to find out more about the volcano, this formidable embodiment of nature's power. It will reveal the secrets of its eruptions, its history, and its workings. A feed directly from the active Showa crater will alert you to real-time seismic data from Mount Sakurajima.
You will then make a second stop at the observatory, located on a hill on the lava field created by the volcano's eruption in 1946. The view of the impressive Sakurajima volcano and Kinko Bay is breathtaking. Near the crater of the southern peak, you can hear the volcano rumbling.
After this visit, you will take the ferry to head back to the Japanese peninsula.

Enjoy four unforgettable days travelling between Fukuoka and Kagoshima. Escape from cities surrounded by volcanoes on the multi-faceted island with breathtaking landscapes. On the third-largest island in Japan, these green surroundings are the lands of the first Shinto gods and the region of the founding myths of Shintoism, evolving through the influences of its neighbouring countries then that of the West.
Day 1 - Kagoshima
After disembarkation procedures are completed, you will be greeted at the port by our local English-speaking representative.
You will start your day of visit at The Chiran samurai district that dates back to the Edo period (1603 to 1868). This period put an end to the incessant wars between rival lords that had engulfed Japan for several centuries, earning it the name "Warring States Period". From tea fields as far as the eye can see to the town's authentic historic character, you'll visit a samurai house while witnessing the azaleas in bloom in the landscaped gardens.
You will then be transferred to the Chiran Peace Museum. Built in 1975, the Museum commemorates the sacrifice of the men who joined the Tokko-tai special attack unit during the Second World War. Better known as kamikazes, 439 of these men came from Chiran. You'll be moved by the sight of the Mitsubishi Zero, a fighter plane extracted from the seabed in 1980, the countless letters and personal effects left behind by the young pilots, and the barracks that bear witness to their daily lives there.
Enjoy a lunch in a local restaurant (Japanese menu).
After lunch, you will be driven to the Sengan-en Garden. Created by Shimadzu Mitsuhisa in 1658, it has the most beautiful panoramic view over the Sakurajima natural monument. It belongs to the estate of the Shimadzu family, descending from Prince Shimadzu Tadayoshi. The family residence, located in the gardens, continues to pass from generation to generation, and has welcomed eminent guests from Japan and elsewhere. You will stroll around the 5 hectares of calming traditional gardens to discover peaceful ponds, bubbling streams, mysterious shrines, tearooms, a bamboo grove and a mountain hiking trail.
You will then take a local ferry on a short crossing to the Kagoshima Peninsula.
You will stop at Mount Sakurajima, one of the most active volcanoes in Japan. During the powerful eruption in 1914, the volcano stopped being an island when the lava flows filled the strait separating it from the island of Kyushu. A road built along an old lava flow leads to the slopes of the volcano. It is still possible to see the top of a large torii (portal) trapped in the lava there.
You will then take the ferry again to head back to the Japanese peninsula.
Then you will be transferred to the 5* hotel selected by PONANT.
Enjoy a dinner in the restaurant of your hotel.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 2 - Kagoshima/Kumamoto
After breakfast, you will complete your hotel check-out before being driven to Kagoshima Station to travel to Kumamoto by train.
You will then take the time to marvel at the Suizenji Gardens, the most beautiful Japanese gardens in Kumamoto. In 1636, the Hosokawa, famous in the region, began the construction of this green space very close to a natural spring providing water of exceptional quality.

Your next stop will be Kumamoto Castle. A symbol of Japanese post-modernism, Kumamoto Castle stands 30 metres (100 feet) tall between Kamitori and Shimotori, the city centre's main shopping streets. Kumamoto Castle's first fortifications were built in the second half of the 15th century. The keep and its massive walls were erected at the end of the Azuchi-Momoyama era (1558-1600), thus combining the charm of the great castles of Japan with the military architecture of the Edo period.

Day 3 - Kumamoto/Beppu
After breakfast, you will complete your hotel check-out before starting your second day of visit in Kumamoto.
You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Japan, with a visit to the Seiwa Bunraku puppet theatre. Bunraku is the name given to the art of bringing wooden puppets to life, which has existed for over 300 years. Three puppeteers are needed to operate each puppet. Dressed head to toe in black, they remain silent during the performance, letting a special chanter called a tayu, accompanied by a shamisen player, tell the story and express each puppet's emotion and personality through its voice and facial gestures.
Enjoy a lunch in a local restaurant (Japanese menu).
After your lunch, you will make two stops as close as possible to Mount Aso, in the heart of the Aso-Kuju National Park.
You will be awestruck by the grandeur of this still active volcano, which has one of the world's largest calderas. It was formed by several violent eruptions thousands of years ago; visitors flock here from all over Japan to marvel at its splendour.

Day 4 - Beppu/Hita/Tokyo
After breakfast, you will complete your hotel check-out before heading out for the "hells" of Beppu.
Seven mysterious and capricious hot springs with steaming ponds of various colours, bubbling mud pools and gases gushing out of the earth will amaze you. They can reach up to 100 degrees Celsius.
You will then stop at the Hita Festival Museum to immerse yourself in the traditional beauty of Japan. It houses 6 yamaboko floats that parade majestically once a year for the Hita Gion festival and classified as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Asset in 2016. This is Japan's largest matsuri, held annually for almost 900 years. The Gion Matsuri in Hita was established in the 9th Century by the Emperor to appease the gods following major natural disasters.
The 8-metres-high yamaboko chars are treasures handed down over the centuries. The colorful, sumptuous ornamentations preserve all the traditional beauty of Japan.
