Tourment d'amour is a traditional cake from Les Saintes. Visitors arriving by boat are usually greeted by vendors selling these cakes filled with coconut, pineapple or guava jam.
From the quay, you will cross the village of Terre de Haut, accompanied by your guide. You will pass through the central square, with the main ferry dock. This charming little town stretches along the water's edge, overlooking the magnificent bay. En route, you will see the church, which was built in the 19th century and has been listed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Continue on to Place de la Mairie, or Place Fleurie, with its elegant, colourful town hall and monument to sailors lost at sea.
Then, continue along the seafront to your workshop for the day. Be sure to take in the local architecture and the views across the bay.
At your workshop, you will be greeted by your host, who will give you all the information you need about tourment d'amour: its history, how it's made, and why it's so particular to the island. It's said that it takes a lot of love to make this cake. In fact, it was made by Saint women to comfort their sailor husbands on their return from sea, after a hard day's work. They represented their love and gratitude.
You will enjoy a demonstration of how to make this little cake, and of course, you will be invited to join in and help with the various stages of production.
Traditionally made with coconut, tourment is also available in other local flavours: pineapple, guava and banana.
Finally, you will leave with your own little bag of tourment, made before your very eyes. You will head back towards the quay, passing through the village and stopping to admire the bay, visit the church, or enjoy the ambiance of Terre de Haut before returning to the ship.
