Between Greece and Italy, set off aboard Le Dumont-d’Urville for a cruise discovering two civilisations that have left traces of their intertwined presence in the Mediterranean. During an extraordinary nine-day odyssey, you will hear accounts of the history and secrets of the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, discover the theatre of Epidaurus, considered one of the masterpieces of Greek architecture, during a stopover in Nafplio; meet a famous puppeteer in his workshop in Syracuse or visit the National Museum of Magna Graecia in Reggio Calabria. The legendary Peloponnese will plunge you into the country’s tumultuous and glorious past. Nafplio is an opportunity to discover the mythical sites of Epidaurus and Mycenae, respectively a ancient theatre and a pre-Hellenic city, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Monemvasia, a gem breathing poetry and revealing its Venetian and Byzantine architecture, commingles with the hustle and bustle and charm of Gythio, which was a former seaport of Sparta then a Roman naval base. In Epirus, you will be transported by your exploration of Parga, bathed by the Ionian Sea, with its fortress, built by the Normans in the 14th century, overlooking the pretty fishing port.
It will now be time to set sail towards Italy. With its ancient archaeological sites, Renaissance palaces, citrus perfumes and internationally recognised cuisine, will welcome you for a few days of unforgettable visits. In the southernmost part of the Boot, you will sail towards Sicily, the Puglia region and Calabria, with three ports of call. Stroll the paved streets with their unique charm in Syracuse, walk on the lungomare, the sea front promenade, in Reggio di Calabria with the majestic Etna as a backdrop, and travel through time and history as you discover the former Greek city of Gallipoli.

The Greek capital city is located on the edge of the Saronic gulf, in the east of the country. It bears a plural name in reference to the first villages that surround the Acropolis. You will be enchanted by the rocky plateau presided by its monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage. In the city below, you can visit some of the liveliest districts in Athens: Plaka, with its maze of colourful streets, and where, in the evenings the drifting aroma of moussaka and garlic prawns will tickle your taste buds. The National Archaeological museum and the Cycladic Art Museum are also some of the city’s key attractions and allow visitors to discover Athens’ cultural past.

The engaging town of Nafplion is staggered up green hillsides of the Argolic Gulf, to the east of the Peloponnese. Do not be surprised by its extremely varied cultural heritage. Some of the must-see visits are the ancient agora on the plateau of Akronafplia, Italianate arcades in Syntagma square as well as the baroque fortress of Palamidi on a hillside of the same name. At the top of the hill, views of the gulf and the surrounding mountains are simply awesome. If you want to chill out by the water’s edge, walk along the Arvanitia promenade to a beautiful creek in the shade of cedars and cypresses.

The jewel of the southern Peloponnese, Monemvasia is the romantic refuge for Athenians. Located in the south of the Peloponnese, on the Mani Peninsula, Gytheio was the main port and naval base of ancient Sparta, located around fifty kilometres inland. In Roman times, the port experienced significant expansion thanks to trading in imperial dye; in fact, the region had an abundance of murex, the rock snails from which this dye, loved by the Romans, was extracted. The town is nestled against Mount Koumaros and dominated by a citadel. Take a stroll and fall under the charm of the calm that reigns over the stairways bordered by small neoclassic houses with steps overrun with wild flowers.

Gallipoli, which comes from the Greek kalle polis, meaning beautiful town, is very aptly named. Located on the heel of the boot, the town known as “the pearl of Puglia” has many attractions. The whiteness of its façades recalls its Greek origins while its architecture echoes its multiple influences. Its old town, perched on a limestone island, concentrates the cultural heritage of this city with a thousand faces, alternately a Roman colony, then Byzantine, the property of the Popes, Norman, under the rule of Taranto… By itself, it tells the story of the different civilisations of the Mediterranean Sea.

At the southern tip of the Italian boot, Reggio di Calabria guards the eastern shore of the Strait of Messina. From the lungomare, the sea front promenade, there are magnificent views over Sicily, a little over 3 km away, and Etna. Rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, Reggio is set out in a grid pattern and has Art Nouveau and Belle Époque architecture that add to its charm. And the fragrance of bergamot, the citrus fruit that dominates the region’s confectionery and perfumery. A visit to the National Archaeological Museum is a must. It is one of the most important in Italy and among its collections are the famous Riace Bronzes, the stunning Greek statues dating from the 5th century BC that were found off the coast in 1972.

Its undulating rocky coastline, the endless sandy beaches, the menacing form of Mount Etna which surveys its island like a patriarch, the flowery gardens on the hillside... Sicily lays out its varied landscapes like a shopkeeper displays his wares. Described by Cicero as “the most beautiful city in the world”, Syracuse was one of the most prestigious cities in Sicily and at her height was even a rival for Athens. A central city of Ancient Greece, it was home to a succession of civilisations, each of which has left their mark. The blend of Arabic, Roman, Norman, Byzantine and Spanish cultures makes Syracuse a town that is extraordinarily rich in fragrances, colours and flavours.

The whole of the Maltese capital Valletta is UNESCO World Heritage listed and occupies a peninsula in the north-east of the island. From the fountain of Tritons to Saint-Elme fort, there are as many majestic streets as there are narrow staircase vennels to explore. The painted loggia and carved corbels on the tall houses will accompany you in your explorations, and you’ll rarely be bothered by traffic. You can visit the Grandmasters palace decorated with coats of arms and frescoes. Saint-John’s cathedral and the ramparts which have guarded the city since the 16th century are also among the most emblematic sites of the city. Arranged in terraces, the Barrakka Gardens will punctuate your promenade with a green and floral experience.
Epidaurus & Mycenae
From the pier, board your coach for a 45-minute ride to Epidaurus.
Lying 30 km (18.6 miles) east of Nafplion, Epidaurus is known for its ancient theatre. Considered one of the most important sanctuaries in the ancient world, Epidaurus was dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius. The world-famous Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC, is a marvel of harmony and acoustics and the best-preserved ancient theatre in Greece. Built in limestone, it can accommodate 12,000 spectators.
Next, re-board your coach for a ride to the archaeological site of Mycenae. The first in-depth excavations were carried out in 1876 by the German archaeologist Schliemann, who was obsessed with finding the grave of King Agamemnon. His diligent work exposed the famous Lion Gate, the entrance to the city which contains the shaft burial graves of some ancient nobles. A short distance away is the Beehive Tomb, so called due to its unusual shape.
Finally, you will board your coach for a 30-minute ride to Nafplion.

From the pier, board your coach for a 1.5-hour ride to the ancient town of Corinth where Saint Paul lived and preached for two years.
In ancient times, Corinth was among the richest cities, as evidenced by its remains including the huge Agora (market square) and the 6th century BC Temple of Apollo. The systematic excavations of the area, initiated by the American School of Classical Studies in 1896, continue today. They have brought to light the agora, temples, fountains, shops, porticoes, baths and various other monuments. The investigations also extended to the Acrocorinth’s fortress, the prehistoric settlements, the theatre, the Odeon, the Asklepion, the cemeteries, the Potters’ Quarter, and other buildings outside the main archaeological site.
Then, you will discover the famous Corinth Canal. The canal is 6.3 km (4 miles) long, 21 metres (70 feet) wide, and has sloping sides up to 52 metres (170 feet) high. It has a water depth of 8 metres (26 feet). Its construction commenced in 1881, although the idea of connecting the Ionian and Aegean seas to provide a shortcut appears to date as far back as Roman times. You will have the opportunity to take panoramic photos from the top.
Following your short stop to admire the canal, you will board your coach for one hour ride back to Nafplion.

Monemvasia, often referred as the “Gibraltar of Greece”, is undoubtedly unique with its fortified medieval town built on a reddish-brown rock and surrounded by the blue sea.
Board your shuttle bus from the tender point and start your exploration by entering the one and only gate of the city (Monemvasia comes from Moni = sole and Emvasia = entrance). The old stone built mansions, the picturesque lanes and the numerous Byzantine churches create an environment of superb beauty.
Monemvasia is split in two: the lower town and the upper town. Walking on the main alley and admiring the wonderful architecture of the houses on your left and right, you will end up at the square of Elkomenos. The square is dominated by the church of Elkomenos on the left, a mosque converted into a museum on the right and an old Turkish cannon in the middle of it.
You will admire the highlights of the medieval town during your walking tour before returning back to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Discover the ruins of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the lower slopes of Mount Taygetus, not far from Sparta, set among scenery of stunning beauty.
As you wander the paved streets, between the churches and houses of nobles, to reach the citadel that crowns the summit, you will have the impression that you are re-living a part of Byzantine Hellenism.
During its two centuries of existence as the Byzantine capital of the Peloponnese, many churches and monasteries were built in Mystras, representing all the capital’s pictorial trends. As you walk up the hill, you will enter through the door of the Castle of Mystras, built by the Franks in 1249. The most important monument you will see as you walk up is the Agios Dimitrios Cathedral. On the floor of the church, the two-headed eagle, symbol of the Palaiologos dynasty, is engraved on a plaque.
In the northern corner of the compound, admire the two most impressive churches in Mystras, Agii Theodori and the Panagia Odigitria, with fabulous wall paintings. The Pantanassa Monastery, constructed in the 15th century and now a hospital convent, is on the eastern slope.

The coach is parked 10 minutes'walk from the pier. Once you have boarded the coach, you will depart for a 1 ¼ -hour drive to Arta, region of Greece still largely untouched by tourism.
The modern town of Arta sits on the ancient site of Ambracia. An ancient Corinthian colony dating back to the 7th century B.C. which later became the capital of the Kingdom of Pyrrhus in about 295 B.C.
Arriving into Arta, who means “fortress”, you will see the famous stone bridge standing over the river Arachthos. The bridge dates back to the 17th century but it is built on the site of older bridges that go back even further to the time of Pyrrus. Legend has it that the bridge's builder, frustrated with each day’s work being ruined by the river, was advised by a bird that the problem could be solved by putting his wife in the foundations which he actually did.
You will enjoy the panoramic view from the bridge on the river and its surroundings before continuing to the Archaeological Museum of Arta, located just a short distance from the bridge and near the banks of Arachthos River.
This museum, fully renovated, houses the antiquities from the wider region of Arta and the exhibits cover a time span from the Palaeolithic to the Roman times. The collection includes funerary stelae and burial offerings from the cemeteries of ancient Ambracia finds from the ancient city of Ambracia, as well as from the "Koudounotrypa" cave, and several other sites in the region of Arta.
Arta is also famous for its Byzantine architecture and churches, the most beautiful and famous one being the church of Panagia Parigoritissa, dating from the 13th century. This church, crowned with towers and domes, is ornate with wall paintings inside dating back hundreds of years that you can discover during your visit.
Following your visit to the church take a stroll around the colourful pedestrian street of the town with its little shops and cafes before you board your coach again for your return drive to the port of Parga.

After a 10-minute walk from the pier, you will board your coach for Ancient Nikopolis, 45 minutes drive from Parga. The city of victory was founded in 31 BC by Augustus, in honour of his victory over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium.
Your first stop will be made at Nikopolis archaeological site. The town grew and flourished both in Roman times, which numbered about 30,000 residents but also later in Christian times. This archaeological site houses many monuments scattered over an area of about 600 ha (1500 acres). Among the most important monuments, you will admire Roman and especially Byzantine walls, a theatre, baths, aqueducts and parts of the old churches.
Then, you will visit the Nikopolis museum which contains collections of architectural parts and sculptures from the ancient city and offerings from the cemetery of Nikopolis.
Following your visit, you will board your coach for a short drive to the town of Preveza. During your walking tour around the picturesque small port, you will visit the old town streets, passing by the public market building. Built in 1939 to house the grocery and butchery shops of the city, the building houses today the Municipality’s Cultural Centre.
Then, you will walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Agios Charalampos (outside visit) before continuing passing by the Venetian Clock Tower. This building, built in 1752, is a typical example of the architecture of the Venetian domination. Its solar clock and the older temple contributed to the reputation of the town.
Finally, you will return to your ship in Parga.

Fall under the spell of one of Puglia’s jewels, Gallipoli, listen to its history in the old town’s maze of narrow lanes and admire its historic and architectural heritage.
A visit through its enigmatic lanes is like a journey back in time, a living exploration of the cultural strata that make Gallipoli such a rare pearl. Time here sometimes seems to stand still. Near the port, where your guided tour will begin, the fisherman are hard at work. Some are gathering together the catch of the day, whereas others are repairing their nets. Off in the distance, the gates of the old town open onto a maze of narrow lanes edged withbright- and warm-coloured dwellings, where the shade of the buildings draws a mystical labyrinth. Each street corner tells its own story of this medieval city, with its multiple heritages and cultural influences. Take the time to listen to the stories told by your local guide, as you admire the surprising St. Agatha’s Cathedral, its columns and its stunning baroque frescoes.
The sun-drenched hills of Gallipoli, bathed by the blue waters of the Mediterranean, made it a regional stronghold in olive-oil production as of the 15th century. The exports of this “liquid gold” were so significant that its production was stored in the four corners of the city in underground cisterns dug out of the local limestone, called carparo. You will have the opportunity to discover the production techniques that were used in the past, as you visit one of the 35 recently renovated underground oil mills.

Stroll around Lecce, the "Baroque Florence", and discover the countless churches, palaces and monuments carved out of this soft and almost golden limestone that gives the city a glowing look, like the chubby cherubins that decorate its façades.
A veritable open-air museum, Lecce is a microcosm of Baroque splendours, located only one hour's drive from Gallipoli. The cherubins, gargoyles, plant patterns, columns and capitals, each more extravagant than the last, are legion here - to the extent that the city lays claim to its own style, the "Barocco Leccese"- since the sculptors and architects of the 16th and 17th centuries had a field day with the regional stone, a marvel of malleability and delicacy.
The Centro Storico historic centre is proof of this, with its cobbled streets and shady squares teeming with incredible rococo treasures, including the Basilica of Santa Croce - with a constellation of sublime ornaments - and the Governor's Palace.
Not far from there, on the Piazza Santa Oronzo, the palazzos, church and Roman amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century try to outdo each other with their beauty.
A few metres away, the Piazza del Duomo, in spectacular golden monochrome, proudly displays a cathedral, its bell tower and the archbishop's palace, making it one of Italy's most beautiful squares. Your exploration of the city centre will finish with a gourmet break in a café.

Reggio Calabria is located on the tip of the Italian Peninsula and is separated from the island of Sicily by the Strait of Messina. It is situated on the slopes of the Aspromonte, a long, craggy mountain range that runs up through the centre of the region.
From the pier, you will board your coach and drive to one of the most important archaeological museums, the prestigious National Archaeological Museum of Magna Græcia, dedicated to Ancient Greece. You will have the possibility to visit the famous Bronzes of Riace, rare example of Greek bronze sculpture, which became one of the symbols of the city. The two statues – discovered on August 1972 near Riace – are considered among the most important sculptural masterpieces of Greek art.
Then, you will proceed to Scilla. Scilla is a village of ancient origins known since the days of Homer, who described it in his Odyssey as the home of Scylla, a nymph turned into a sea monster by the sorceress Circe.

Visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Augustus, used for fights between gladiators and wild beasts, the Altar of Hieron, constructed in the 2nd century BC to celebrate the “Eleutherian Feast”, the Latomie of Paradise, huge caverns once used as prisons, the Ear of Dionysius, an enormous grotto with extraordinary echo and the Greek Theatre, one of the largest in the Hellenic World, constructed in the 5th century BC and successively enlarged.
Upon completion of the visit, re-board your coach for the short drive to Ortygia, which you will visit on foot. On Ortygia Island discover the Piazza Pancali (the ruins of the Temple of Apollo of the 6th century BC), Corso Matteotti, Archimede’s Place, Piazza Duomo. Depart by coach from the port through the countryside, passing through villages and almond groves as you make your way to Noto, the second largest town in Syracuse province and the best example of Sicilian Baroque architecture on the island.
You will cross on foot the Public Gardens, where it is possible to admire the busts of the artists who contributed to Noto’s urban culture and style.
Besides the 18th century Cathedral, currently under restoration after damage suffered during 1990 earthquake, other impressive buildings are the Churches of St Domenico and of St Charles (del Colleggio), the “Ducezio” Palace and “Villadorata” Palace.
Noto has been declared a Heritage site by UNESCO, who also provides financial support for the reconstruction of monuments destroyed during 1990 earthquake.

It was also restored to host some competitions during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Day 2 - Athens
After breakfast, your walking guided visit will be first focus on Anafiotika district.
This picturesque old quarter is located under the Acropolis. This very typical architecture looks like to the Cycladic islands, with narrow streets and white-washed houses with colorful shutters.
You will learn more about its history with your guide. And you will have the perfect opportunity to take the most beautiful photos, through the lens of a professional photograph at your disposal to give you tips and help you..
Later, you will walk until a local tavern in the Plaka district and you will enjoy a traditional Greek lunch followed by a short time at leisure in Plaka.
During the afternoon, you will visit the Acropolis Museum, which is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built in order to house every artifact found on the rock and at its foot, covering a large period of time from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. Nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres.
After the Museum visit, time at leisure to strool around the Museum area (about 1 hour), or to visit on your own, the Acropolis site (this visit is not accessible to disabled people). Then short drive back to your hotel (about 15 minutes).

From the pier, board your coach for a 45-minute ride to Epidaurus.
Lying 30 km (18.6 miles) east of Nafplion, Epidaurus is known for its ancient theatre. Considered one of the most important sanctuaries in the ancient world, Epidaurus was dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius. The world-famous Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, built in the 4th century BC, is a marvel of harmony and acoustics and the best-preserved ancient theatre in Greece. Built in limestone, it can accommodate 12,000 spectators.
Next, re-board your coach for a ride to the archaeological site of Mycenae. The first in-depth excavations were carried out in 1876 by the German archaeologist Schliemann, who was obsessed with finding the grave of King Agamemnon. His diligent work exposed the famous Lion Gate, the entrance to the city which contains the shaft burial graves of some ancient nobles. A short distance away is the Beehive Tomb, so called due to its unusual shape.
Finally, you will board your coach for a 30-minute ride to Nafplion.

From the pier, board your coach for a 1.5-hour ride to the ancient town of Corinth where Saint Paul lived and preached for two years.
In ancient times, Corinth was among the richest cities, as evidenced by its remains including the huge Agora (market square) and the 6th century BC Temple of Apollo. The systematic excavations of the area, initiated by the American School of Classical Studies in 1896, continue today. They have brought to light the agora, temples, fountains, shops, porticoes, baths and various other monuments. The investigations also extended to the Acrocorinth’s fortress, the prehistoric settlements, the theatre, the Odeon, the Asklepion, the cemeteries, the Potters’ Quarter, and other buildings outside the main archaeological site.
Then, you will discover the famous Corinth Canal. The canal is 6.3 km (4 miles) long, 21 metres (70 feet) wide, and has sloping sides up to 52 metres (170 feet) high. It has a water depth of 8 metres (26 feet). Its construction commenced in 1881, although the idea of connecting the Ionian and Aegean seas to provide a shortcut appears to date as far back as Roman times. You will have the opportunity to take panoramic photos from the top.
Following your short stop to admire the canal, you will board your coach for one hour ride back to Nafplion.

Monemvasia, often referred as the “Gibraltar of Greece”, is undoubtedly unique with its fortified medieval town built on a reddish-brown rock and surrounded by the blue sea.
Board your shuttle bus from the tender point and start your exploration by entering the one and only gate of the city (Monemvasia comes from Moni = sole and Emvasia = entrance). The old stone built mansions, the picturesque lanes and the numerous Byzantine churches create an environment of superb beauty.
Monemvasia is split in two: the lower town and the upper town. Walking on the main alley and admiring the wonderful architecture of the houses on your left and right, you will end up at the square of Elkomenos. The square is dominated by the church of Elkomenos on the left, a mosque converted into a museum on the right and an old Turkish cannon in the middle of it.

Discover the ruins of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the lower slopes of Mount Taygetus, not far from Sparta, set among scenery of stunning beauty.
As you wander the paved streets, between the churches and houses of nobles, to reach the citadel that crowns the summit, you will have the impression that you are re-living a part of Byzantine Hellenism.
During its two centuries of existence as the Byzantine capital of the Peloponnese, many churches and monasteries were built in Mystras, representing all the capital’s pictorial trends. As you walk up the hill, you will enter through the door of the Castle of Mystras, built by the Franks in 1249. The most important monument you will see as you walk up is the Agios Dimitrios Cathedral. On the floor of the church, the two-headed eagle, symbol of the Palaiologos dynasty, is engraved on a plaque.
In the northern corner of the compound, admire the two most impressive churches in Mystras, Agii Theodori and the Panagia Odigitria, with fabulous wall paintings. The Pantanassa Monastery, constructed in the 15th century and now a hospital convent, is on the eastern slope.

The coach is parked 10 minutes'walk from the pier. Once you have boarded the coach, you will depart for a 1 ¼ -hour drive to Arta, region of Greece still largely untouched by tourism.
The modern town of Arta sits on the ancient site of Ambracia. An ancient Corinthian colony dating back to the 7th century B.C. which later became the capital of the Kingdom of Pyrrhus in about 295 B.C.
Arriving into Arta, who means “fortress”, you will see the famous stone bridge standing over the river Arachthos. The bridge dates back to the 17th century but it is built on the site of older bridges that go back even further to the time of Pyrrus. Legend has it that the bridge's builder, frustrated with each day’s work being ruined by the river, was advised by a bird that the problem could be solved by putting his wife in the foundations which he actually did.
You will enjoy the panoramic view from the bridge on the river and its surroundings before continuing to the Archaeological Museum of Arta, located just a short distance from the bridge and near the banks of Arachthos River.
This museum, fully renovated, houses the antiquities from the wider region of Arta and the exhibits cover a time span from the Palaeolithic to the Roman times. The collection includes funerary stelae and burial offerings from the cemeteries of ancient Ambracia finds from the ancient city of Ambracia, as well as from the "Koudounotrypa" cave, and several other sites in the region of Arta.
Arta is also famous for its Byzantine architecture and churches, the most beautiful and famous one being the church of Panagia Parigoritissa, dating from the 13th century. This church, crowned with towers and domes, is ornate with wall paintings inside dating back hundreds of years that you can discover during your visit.
Following your visit to the church take a stroll around the colourful pedestrian street of the town with its little shops and cafes before you board your coach again for your return drive to the port of Parga.

After a 10-minute walk from the pier, you will board your coach for Ancient Nikopolis, 45 minutes drive from Parga. The city of victory was founded in 31 BC by Augustus, in honour of his victory over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium.
Your first stop will be made at Nikopolis archaeological site. The town grew and flourished both in Roman times, which numbered about 30,000 residents but also later in Christian times. This archaeological site houses many monuments scattered over an area of about 600 ha (1500 acres). Among the most important monuments, you will admire Roman and especially Byzantine walls, a theatre, baths, aqueducts and parts of the old churches.
Then, you will visit the Nikopolis museum which contains collections of architectural parts and sculptures from the ancient city and offerings from the cemetery of Nikopolis.
Following your visit, you will board your coach for a short drive to the town of Preveza. During your walking tour around the picturesque small port, you will visit the old town streets, passing by the public market building. Built in 1939 to house the grocery and butchery shops of the city, the building houses today the Municipality’s Cultural Centre.
Then, you will walk to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Agios Charalampos (outside visit) before continuing passing by the Venetian Clock Tower. Stroll around Lecce, the "Baroque Florence", and discover the countless churches, palaces and monuments carved out of this soft and almost golden limestone that gives the city a glowing look, like the chubby cherubins that decorate its façades.
A veritable open-air museum, Lecce is a microcosm of Baroque splendours, located only one hour's drive from Gallipoli. The cherubins, gargoyles, plant patterns, columns and capitals, each more extravagant than the last, are legion here - to the extent that the city lays claim to its own style, the "Barocco Leccese"- since the sculptors and architects of the 16th and 17th centuries had a field day with the regional stone, a marvel of malleability and delicacy.
The Centro Storico historic centre is proof of this, with its cobbled streets and shady squares teeming with incredible rococo treasures, including the Basilica of Santa Croce - with a constellation of sublime ornaments - and the Governor's Palace.

Depart the pier by coach and drive to the archaeological area, which you will reach after a short drive.
Visit the Roman Amphitheatre of Augustus, used for fights between gladiators and wild beasts, the Altar of Hieron, constructed in the 2nd century BC to celebrate the “Eleutherian Feast”, the Latomie of Paradise, huge caverns once used as prisons, the Ear of Dionysius, an enormous grotto with extraordinary echo and the Greek Theatre, one of the largest in the Hellenic World, constructed in the 5th century BC and successively enlarged.
Upon completion of the visit, re-board your coach for the short drive to Ortygia, which you will visit on foot. On Ortygia Island discover the Piazza Pancali (the ruins of the Temple of Apollo of the 6th century BC), Corso Matteotti, Archimede’s Place, Piazza Duomo. Visit the Cathedral in Baroque style, erected over the remains of the Doric Temple of Minerva: in the interiors, see the undamaged twelve Doric columns. Then visit the fountain of Arethusa, the nymph praised by Pindar and Virgilio in one of the most touching and fine myths. Several nobility palaces – majority of them originating in the 15th and 16th centuries – will be seen from outside during the walking tour.
Then, return to the port and your ship.

Depart by coach from the port through the countryside, passing through villages and almond groves as you make your way to Noto, the second largest town in Syracuse province and the best example of Sicilian Baroque architecture on the island.
You will cross on foot the Public Gardens, where it is possible to admire the busts of the artists who contributed to Noto’s urban culture and style.
Besides the 18th century Cathedral, currently under restoration after damage suffered during 1990 earthquake, other impressive buildings are the Churches of St Domenico and of St Charles (del Colleggio), the “Ducezio” Palace and “Villadorata” Palace.
Noto has been declared a Heritage site by UNESCO, who also provides financial support for the reconstruction of monuments destroyed during 1990 earthquake.
A refreshment will be offered at a local bar and then you will enjoy some free time to browse around before commencing the return drive to Syracuse.

Drive to Dingli Cliff for a photostop brefore Mdina visiting. Then, proceed to Mdina - Malta’s Old Capital, one of the locations used by the film “Black Eagle” featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and by “Game of Thrones” series. Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city, with its extraordinary mix of medieval and Baroque architecture.
Then, Mosta discovery, famous for its church and its spectacular dome inspired by the Pantheon, in Rome.
Continue with the visit of Palazzo Parisio, a unique 19th century palace in the heart of the Mediterranean. Palazzo Parisio is not only another palace of the legendary Knights of St. John, but the ultimate memorial of ambitions, aspirations and pretensions of a 19th century noble family. It houses two baroque walled gardens, including a lovely orangery – a miniature Versailles.
Enjoy a small snack in the Palace.

Day 1 - Valletta
After breakfast aboard disembark the ship and depart on a walking excursion of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Valletta, Malta's fortified capital city located on a hilly peninsula between two natural harbors.
You will visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens to enjoy panoramic views over the Grand Harbor. Proceed to the 16th-century St. John's Co-Cathedral and view Carravaggio's famous masterpiece, The Beheading of St. John the Baptist, during an inside visit.
Then, you will board your coach and drive to a local vineyard. At the Meridiana Winery, enjoy a wine tasting of some of the country's most delicious wines. Proceed to a historic local restaurant for a lunch of traditional Maltese specialties.
After lunch, you will reboard your coach and drive to the Hagar Qim Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site (after a photostop at Blue Grotto). The temple complex dates to 3600 BC and is in a beautiful location on a cliff overlooking the sea.

Day 2 - Valletta
After breakfast at the hotel, check out and transfer to Malta International Airport for flights home.
