Set off aboard Le Champlain for an 11-day cruise and enjoy an exceptional experience exploring Norway in the winter. From Tromso, you will sail towards these magical lands, where your exceptional itinerary will take in snow-capped summits, immaculate landscapes and the discovery of millennial traditions.
Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, to choose from a selection offered by PONANT. During this cruise, set off to discover the legendary Nordkapp, or the North Cape, from Honningsvag, appreciate the charm of the Lofoten Islands during a day of visits from Reine, or explore Tromso, the capital of the Arctic, in a rigid-inflatable boat. Your ship will first make its way south where you will witness the mysterious charm of the Lofoten archipelago. These islands have landscapes of surreal beauty alternating between sea, spectacular fjords, mountain slopes and bright-coloured huts on stilts.
You will then continue with an immersion in the land of the Samis. From your disembarkation in Narvik, in the very heart of captivating summits plunging into the sumptuous Ofotfjord, you will be invited to explore the ancestral tales of this reindeer-herding indigenous people.
Le Champlain will set sail for Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world. During your port of call in this charming fishing port, you will have the opportunity to explore the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of triangulations stretching from Norway to the Black Sea, and the first technical and scientific tool to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You will also sail by Bear Island, halfway between the North Cape of Norway and the South Cape of Spitsbergen. From your ship, you will marvel at this small strip of land with its craggy coastline and high jagged cliffs.
Le Champlain will once again set sail south, for the captivating Honningsvag. This port of call will take you to the northernmost point of Europe: the North Cape. On this cliff, home to the emblematic Milestone, a globe-shaped monument, allow yourself the time to dream as you gaze upon the vastness of the Barents Sea.
You will then discover Alta. With the polar night in full swing, you may be lucky enough to admire the unique colours of the Northern Lights as they ripple and spin above the Arctic Circle.
Your trip into the very heart of the immenseness of the Norwegian Arctic polar world will end in Tromso, your disembarkation port.

Hervé Gaymard
Hervé GAYMARD, Member of the Institut de France (Academy of Moral and Political Sciences), former Minister (Economy and Finance, Agriculture, Health) and honorary member of Parliament (National Assembly), chairs the Charles de Gaulle Foundation and the Departmental Council of Savoie.
He is the author of numerous works, historical (Happiness and greatness, those days when the French were happy; Bernard Fall, a man at war), literary (For Malraux; For the book), political and geopolitical (The road to Chapieux; Deliver us from France; The line of force). He wrote the preface to the reissue of Charles de Gaulle's pre-war works (Discord among the enemy; The edge of the sword; Towards the professional army; France and its army).
He shows a keen interest in polar issues, as shown by his report The world in the mirror of the poles, as well as his presentation to the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences, France, a polar power.
He is also the author of numerous publications concerning Africa, as well as agricultural issues.

Clara Gaymard
Clara Gaymard is co-founder of RAISE.
Clara Gaymard and Gonzague de Blignières launched in April 2018 the “Mouvement pour une Economie Bienveillante” (the Movment for a Benevolent Economy).
Clara Gaymard is member of the Board of Directors of Bouygues and LVMH.
From 2006 to 2016, she was President and CEO of General Electric France. Prior to those positions, she held prominent international functions, especially to develop relations between GE and governments.
Clara Gaymard started her career in 1982 at Paris city hall and joined in 1986 the State Audit Office as an auditor then as a counsellor. In 1991, she became Business Advisor and worked at the Economic Section of the French embassy in Cairo, Egypt. Back in Paris, she was in charge of EU economic relations at the Ministry of Economy and became in 1995 chief of staff of the Minister of Solidarity between Generations. Then she was responsible for the “SME mission” until 2003 at the Ministry of Economy and Finance before to be appointed, in 2003, as Ambassador and Delegate for International Investments and President of Invest In France Agency (AFII).
Clara was also President of the Women’s Forum from 2015 to 2018.
Former student of ENA, Clara Gaymard is a graduate of IEP Paris.
Clara is an Officer in the National Order of Merit and Knight of Legion of Honor. She is also Commendatore of Italian Republic Merit Order.
Clara is also author of several novels and essays, including “Faut qu’on parle” published in 2016.

During the days spent on board, you are advised to wear comfortable clothes or casual outfits. The entire ship is air-conditioned, so a light sweater, a light jacket or a shawl may be necessary. When moving about in the public areas of the ship and the decks, light but comfortable shoes are recommended.

In the evening, you are advised to wear smart-casual attire, especially when dining in our restaurants where wearing shorts and tee-shirts is not allowed.

Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing. This journey without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, depending on the activities offered, or to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the PONANT photographers in their dedicated space. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. 1 March 2025 - Sailing along Bjornoya (Bear Island)

Halfway between Norway and Spitsbergen, you will sail not far from the coastlines of Bjørnøya, the southernmost island of Svalbard. From your ship, observe this isolated piece of land discovered in 1596 by the Dutch navigator Willem Barents, then looking for the Northwest Passage. Following a tough fight between a polar bear and the members of the expedition, he dubbed the place Bear Island. Regularly covered by a thick layer of fog, Bjørnøya shelters a meteorological station built in 1923, which is still in operation. Declared a nature reserve in 2002, the island is above all home to an enormous colony of sea birds: skuas, guillemots, puffins, Tridactyl gulls, petrels, gulls and little auks all coexist here.

If you feel like you have arrived at the end of the world in Honningsvåg, it is because this is the case. Halfway between Oslo and the North Pole, it competes with Hammerfest for the status of “the northernmost town in Continental Europe”. Colourful houses light up this charming and typically Norwegian fishing port nestled in the hollows of the region’s mountainous terrain. Travellers come to stay in the village to go to the North Cape. At the end of the road, you will see the globe that indicates that you are at the very end of Europe. At this point, only the Svalbard archipelago separates you from the North Pole. There is sea as far as the eye can see. The Northern Lights, the view of the immense cliff plunging into the sea, the thousands of puffins, gannets and cormorants that spin around you: everything here is grandiose.

WWII in Northern Norway
Gain an in-depth understanding of Narvik's role in World War II during a visit to the War Museum and city cemetery. An important year-round, ice-free harbor with railway links to the rich iron ore mines of nearby Sweden, this northern port city was strategically vital to both the Germans and the Allies during the early days of the conflict. This culminated in the Battle of Narvik in April 1940-and the five-year Nazi occupation of the city.
Take a short drive to the Narvik War Museum, where its curator will guide you through the collection of photos and artifacts. You will also see a short film that focuses on the local events of World War II, as well as the universal issues related to war.
After browsing the exhibits, make a solemn visit to the city's cemetery, the final resting spot for the 34 Commonwealth soldiers who died during the Narvik campaign, before returning to your ship.in.

Husky dog-sledding experience
From the pier, you will board your coach for a 1½-hour transfer to Riksgransen on the Swedish border. On your way, learn about the Navvies who constructed the Ofotbanen railway, Norwegian cottage life and traditions as well as stories from WWII. Upon arrival, you will meet the dogs and receive a short safety briefing.
Sled over the scenic Arctic landscapes while being pulled by a team of lively huskies. Relax as your experienced musher guides and the well-trained dogs negotiate the rugged terrain. You will breathe the fresh air, riding through the magnificent landscapes.
At the end of your ride, you will return to the husky camp to warm yourself with a hot beverage before returning to your ship.

This tour involves a moderate level of effort and attention. A signed waiver is required to participate. Depending on the temperatures and amount of snow that falls, the grounds may be slippery or even pure ice! Participants must wear warm-thermal, water- and wind-proof clothes. In the beginning and the end of the winter season, if the snow is not there, the sled will be replaced by a kart. Be aware your clothes might be dirty upon contact with dogs. This tour is limited to 30 participants. Reservations can only be made in advance and cannot be made on board (closed 10 days before the departure of your cruise).

Journey to Polar Park
Travel across Norway’s scenic winter landscapes for a visit to the impressive Polar Park. Located at the 69° northern latitude, this reserve is the northernmost wildlife park in the world. The park is home to a large variety of Arctic mammals, including wolf, lynx, wolverine, mush oxen, elk, reindeer, mountain fox and badger.
From the pier, embark on a picturesque journey by coach from Narvik to the park. You will cross the 2,500-foot-long Rombak Bridge and continue along the Herjansfjord before heading inland through the birch tree forests of the Gratangs Valley.
At Polar Park, you will be able to walk along a 2½-mile-long asphalt path that will allow you to observe the animals in their enclosures. The living spaces are large—the park boasts the world’s biggest area-per-animal ratio—so be patient and keep watch for the inhabitants.
Then, you will enjoy a light lunch at the park before returning to your ship.

This tour involves to walk uphill and downhill, on partly uneven grounds with gravel and maybe snow, depending on the weather. This excursion is very strenuous and requires to walk, at least, 1.2 mile (2 km). Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. Arctic railway
Arctic Train transports you 43 kilometres through a desolate, wild and beautiful landscape along the Ofot line. The line stretches from Narvik in Nordland to Kiruna in Sweden and is Norway's most northerly railway. From the ice-blue fjord in Narvik to the bare mountains in Sweden, there are several historical events that form a dramatic backdrop for this excursion.
The construction of the Ofotbanen started at the end of the 19th century to ensure access to an ice-free export port for the huge iron ore deposits from northern Sweden. Itinerant workers, so-called "rallers" sought their fortune in what was referred to as Europe's "Klondyke", and at most over 5,000 people were involved in the construction of the track. As an export route for Europe's largest and most important iron ore deposits, the route was particularly important to control during the Second World War.
During your panoramic trip, cinamon buns and hot beverages will be served in the train.

Reine by RIB boat
Immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Lofoten Islands in search of sea eagles in a RIB (rigid inflatable boat). A short transfer will take you to the nearby RIB pier, where your guide will fit you with a protective waterproof suit. As you set off with your experienced helmsman, you will whisk across the sparkling waters, perhaps leaping over the wake of a passing ferry and sidling up to vertical cliffs rising from the water.
The RIB tour will take you around Reinefjord. You will take a break along the way see sea eagles. With a wingspan of more than six feet, these birds of prey are an impressive sight. Fish will be used to attract them, so there is a good chance you will see one. Afterward, you will return to your ship by RIB.
Afterwards you will return to your awaiting ship.
- Participants must wear warm-thermal clothes and flat sneaker shoes. Both water- and wind-proof winter equipment and eye-glasses will be provided. This tour can be cancelled on short notice by the RIB guide if the weather turns bad, but generally the tour can operate in all weather conditions expect for heavy rain and fog. This tour is not suitable for passengers with back problems or with limited physical abilities. This is a high activity tour that at times can be strenuous and the RIB boat can reach high speeds. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. This tour is limited to 12 participants.

Charm of Lofoten
Spend a leisurely day learning about the maritime history of the Lofoten Islands. Discover the architecture of the fishermen's dwellings, which today serve as popular holiday homes for visitors who want to take part in the region's many outdoor activities.
From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic drive to Å. This village is an open-air museum, representing the Lofoten's fisheries and displays 150 year old coastal building environments. Upon arrival, you will be free to discover the village at your own pace for 30 minutes
Continue your scenic drive to Flakstad Bay to explore the charming 18th-century red church. It is the second oldest church in Lofoten and built in the shape of a cross.
Then, you will take the direction of Sund to visit the interesting Fishery Museum and Smithy. The museum was originally established in 1964, in the idea of a unique and lively museum, depicting the history of boats and fishing equipment. Vestvagoy & Lofotr Museum
From the pier, embark your coach and head to the village of Borg.
Upon arrival, enjoy a visit to the Lofotr Museum. Here at Borg, archaeologists have found a chieftain’s farmstead with sensational objects bearing witness to a centre of power during the Viking period. The main house is the largest Viking building ever discovered, measuring 83 metres long and 9 metres high (270 and 30 feet). A copy has been built next to the excavation ground and you will feel as if you were transported back to the year 900, whilst farm animals are grazing peacefully outside.
Then, get back to your coach and head to Flakstad Island for a photostop at the Flakstad church built in 1780, a red little church made of driftwood, believed to have come from Siberia.

Aurora Borealis hunt
Set out in search of the unpredictable, ethereal aurora borealis as you watch the night skies over Reine. On a clear night, the northern lights may manifest themselves as faint wisps of colour or great dancing, shimmering curtains of light over the boreal forests and tundra. Ideal conditions include clear night-time skies and sufficient solar activity, as the phenomenon occurs when electrically charged solar particles in the atmosphere interact with Earth’s magnetic field. There is no guarantee that the unpredictable lights will be visible.
Prior to departure, your expert guides will study the forecast to best predict where and when the lights will appear. You will venture out to viewpoints in and around Leknes, where weather conditions can vary greatly in a small geographical area and change again within short spans of time. With luck, you will be rewarded with a glimpse of this majestic wonder.

Mikkelgammen Sami camp
This tour gives you the opportunity to enjoy an authentic native experience at a traditional Sami Camp.
After meeting your coach at the pier, a short drive will take you to Mount Salen, where you will be treated to breathtaking panoramic views over the town and the surrounding islands. From here, you will continue on to the Mikkelgammen Sami camp, where you will learn more about the Sami history and culture while seated on reindeer skins that are placed upon springy birch twigs, directly on the ground around an open fire.
During your visit, you will experience joik songs performed by the Sami couple. Joiks are songs dedicated to each member of the Sami population. The Joik has no actual words and can describe, for instance, a particular mood, nature, character or a person. Each Joik is personal and unique to each member. The Sami people at the camp will be wearing their colourful national costumes, which will be explained in detail.

King Crab safari
Venture out on the waters to catch your own king crab on this thrilling excursion.
Walk to our fishing pier with your guide, put on your required floating suits at the adventure centre, follow your guide to the pier and set off in a deep-sea raft into the pristine waters of Sarnesfjorden. The vistas are breathtaking, with green slopes soaring above the sea on all sides.
Our destination is a stunning fjord, where you will see how prized king crabs are harvested as your guide pulls the trap from the watery depths. Though a crab from these waters can measure up to six feet between its claws and weigh as much as 22 pounds, we are likely to only catch “small” crabs at 6 to 15 pounds.
Back on shore, you will learn about the life, anatomy and history of the king crab and feast on your catch, with preparation tips from the cook.

Take a glimpse of the region’s rich fishing heritage and learn how it has prospered from its relationship with the sea.
You will drive through Honningsvåg to the most scenic fishing village on Magerøya Island, beautifully nestled at the head of a narrow fjord. This pretty hamlet is home to the “Gallery East of the Sun,” which exhibits art, handicrafts, and books, all inspired by the island and its ever-changing seasons. The artist will welcome you and explain her unusual works. Afterwards, stroll with your guide around the typical fishing wharf and explore on your own.

Take in glorious vistas along Europe’s far northern shores and enjoy an independent visit at Nordkapp (North Cape).
You will meet your coach at our berth and transfer approximately one hour to one of Europe’s most stunning natural sights. Located on the reaches of Magerøya Island, where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, the cliffs of Nordkapp rise more than 1,000 feet from the sea and are topped by a large, flat plateau.
Upon arrival, you will have time to take in the spectacular vista of barren tundra. You will also have a chance to visit the North Cape Hall, which chronicles the history of the region. From the pier, you will board your coach for a 30-minute transfer to the Husky dog centre. Upon arrival, you will meet your guides and receive a short safety briefing.
Sled over the scenic Arctic landscapes while being pulled by a team of lively huskies. Relax as your experienced musher guides and the well-trained dogs negotiate the rugged terrain. You will breathe the fresh air, riding through the forests and along the Alta river.
At the end of your ride, you will return to the husky farm to warm yourself with a hot beverage while sitting in a traditional Sami lavvu (tent), listening to your guide’s tales of racing sled dogs. Sami camp discovery
From the pier, embark on a 1 ¼ hour journey by coach to Máze, a Sami village located on the outskirts of Alta.
The Sami’s roots in Arctic Europe trace back at least 5,000 years. Descendants of nomadic people, they moved depending on their country geopolitic and finished to be confined in the northern extremity of the country. They belong to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic family, and are mostly represented in Lapland and adjacent areas of Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. Learn about the vibrant culture of indigenous Norwegians during your visit.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your hosts, members of a reindeer-herding family. You will have the opportunity to climb on board a reindeer-pulled sled for a picturesque ride along a frozen river. Relax as you glide along to the sound of reindeer bells and snow crunching under hooves.

Aurora Borealis hunt
Your evening experience will start onboard! Your northern lights expert, Trygve will meet you on board the ship, where he will explain the northern lights phenomenon, as well as providing advices on the best camera settings needed to photograph the lights. The hard work of planning has already been done by your expert, by monitoring the skies and the northern lights forecast beforehand to ensure that you will be at the very best location to observe the sky.
Then, board your local coach and head to your observation spot. On location, the anticipation of spotting the lights is all part of the fun, and your eyes are bound to be glued to the sky as you wait for them to show. Trygve has many years of experience, and his sighting rate is an incredible 95%, so if the lights are visible, he should know where to find them. If you are lucky, the vivid colours will certainly amaze you. In fact words cannot do them justice; you really have to see them for yourself! All the camps are situated near warm facilities or ‘Lavvu’s’, where you can enjoy hot drinks whilst you wait for those magical lights.

Scenic Tromso by RIB boat
This excursion starts at the pier where you will be picked up and escorted to the RIB (rigid-hulled inflatable buoyancy) boat.

Tromso, Arctic capital
Tromsø, the capital of the North is located on Troms, an island covered with forests. It is also called "the gateway to the Arctic", since it used to be the headquarter of seal and walrus hunters, and the starting point for several Arctic expeditions.
From the pier, board your coach for a tour of this charming city and proceed to the Science Centre of Northern Norway. Here, you will sit and lean back in the comfortable chairs of the planetarium to watch the beautiful film "Experience the Aurora". During the 25-minute show, you will learn everything about the illusive Northern Lights with most of the footage shot in the Tromsø region.
After the visit, depart to the Polar Museum. The museum is located in the old Custom House. It is closely linked with the Arctic Association which aims to preserve records from bygone times, when Tromsø was a major base for hunting and expeditions on a larger scale. The museum also shows a great part of the equipment, skis, tents etc. that the explorer Roald Amundsen used on his South Pole expedition.
Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Arctic Cathedral passing the famous Tromsø Bridge. The ultra-modern architecture of the cathedral symbolizes the immense strength of the ice pack in the Arctic Ocean. The interior is dominated by the beautiful stained glass-window covering the eastern wall, picturing "The Return of Christ". After the visit to the church, head back to the pier.

Day 1 - Lulea
Meet at Lulea airport in the Arrival Hall. Look for PONANT sign. You will be greeted by our local representative off the flight selected by PONANT or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent).

Day 2 - Lulea / Sjulsmark
After breakfast, you will set off to meet the Sámi of Sweden, who are one of the world’s last indigenous peoples, with their own language and culture. You will enjoy talking with them about their traditions and their way of life, which are very closely connected to nature. It will be a particularly enriching moment during which you will learn all about the heritage of this people, a heritage that these days can still be found in Lapland’s architecture, contemporary art and culinary traditions. For centuries, the Sámi have built their way of life around reindeer breeding and herding; the reindeer are bred mainly for their antlers, fur and milk. The Sámi are also renowned for their traditional handicraft, known as Duodji, which has been passed down for generations.
Thanks to this activity, you will enjoy a genuine experience of the life of the Sámi and their day-to-day in Swedish Lapland. You will drink freshly boiled coffee around the fire in a lavvu (Sámi tent), before heading out to meet the reindeer.
After eating a typical Sámi meal around a traditional fire for lunch, you will enjoy a dog-sled ride into the heart of majestic landscapes of frozen rivers and wild forests, an unforgettable close-up encounter with Lappish nature.
After dining in a local restaurant, you will depart on a bus excursion to observe the Northern Lights.
The guide will make regular short stops, to explain this fascinating phenomenon and ensure that you enjoy optimal viewing in the best conditions (subject to favourable weather conditions).
Then, you will be transferred to your hotel.
Day 3 - Kiruna
After breakfast, you will take the train to Kiruna (a journey of around 4 hours), the largest town in Swedish Lapland.
On arrival, you will have lunch in a local restaurant and then head to your hotel for check-in.
The aftenoon will be focused on discovering the famous Icehotel which is located 200-km (124-miles) north of the Arctic Circle. You will be able to discover the incredible ice sculptures that have earned this hotel’s reputation all over the world.

Day 4 - Kiruna / Bjørkliden
After breakfast, experience traditional Sámi lifestyle and the art of reindeer sledding with your dedicated guides. Help train, feed and race reindeer while learning about the importance these beautiful animals have to the Sámi way of life. To get out to our herd, you go through the winter forests with snowmobiles and sledges. Once in place, you get to try racing a reindeer sleigh on a 200 meter long track, a traditional sport up here. After the tour, we gather in our lávvu tent, to warm up and taste traditional Sámi food. While your guide is preparing the lunch there is lots of time for interesting conversations and questions about the local lifestyle.

You will then reach the Aurora Sky Station, the best observation point for the Northern Lights, where you will dine before heading back to your hotel and spending the night there.
Day 5 - Bjørkliden / Tromsø
After breakfast, you will then take a bus to Polar Park, located 75-km (47 miles) north of Narvik in the town of Bardu, your gateway to Norway’s wild expanses, with large areas offering a habitat that is as natural as possible for the animals.
This reserve is home to native Arctic animals including bears, wolves, and lynxes as well as deer, moose, reindeer and musk oxen.
You will then have lunch in a local restaurant on the road to Tromsø, where you will embark on board your ship.

Gain an in-depth understanding of Narvik's role in World War II during a visit to the War Museum and city cemetery. An important year-round, ice-free harbor with railway links to the rich iron ore mines of nearby Sweden, this northern port city was strategically vital to both the Germans and the Allies during the early days of the conflict. This culminated in the Battle of Narvik in April 1940-and the five-year Nazi occupation of the city.
Take a short drive to the Narvik War Museum, where its curator will guide you through the collection of photos and artifacts. You will also see a short film that focuses on the local events of World War II, as well as the universal issues related to war.
After browsing the exhibits, make a solemn visit to the city's cemetery, the final resting spot for the 34 Commonwealth soldiers who died during the Narvik campaign, before returning to your ship.in.

Husky dog-sledding experience
From the pier, you will board your coach for a 1½-hour transfer to Riksgransen on the Swedish border. On your way, learn about the Navvies who constructed the Ofotbanen railway, Norwegian cottage life and traditions as well as stories from WWII. Upon arrival, you will meet the dogs and receive a short safety briefing.
Sled over the scenic Arctic landscapes while being pulled by a team of lively huskies. Relax as your experienced musher guides and the well-trained dogs negotiate the rugged terrain. You will breathe the fresh air, riding through the magnificent landscapes.
At the end of your ride, you will return to the husky camp to warm yourself with a hot beverage before returning to your ship.

Journey to Polar Park
Travel across Norway’s scenic winter landscapes for a visit to the impressive Polar Park. Located at the 69° northern latitude, this reserve is the northernmost wildlife park in the world. The park is home to a large variety of Arctic mammals, including wolf, lynx, wolverine, mush oxen, elk, reindeer, mountain fox and badger.
From the pier, embark on a picturesque journey by coach from Narvik to the park. You will cross the 2,500-foot-long Rombak Bridge and continue along the Herjansfjord before heading inland through the birch tree forests of the Gratangs Valley.
At Polar Park, you will be able to walk along a 2½-mile-long asphalt path that will allow you to observe the animals in their enclosures. The living spaces are large—the park boasts the world’s biggest area-per-animal ratio—so be patient and keep watch for the inhabitants.
Then, you will enjoy a light lunch at the park before returning to your ship.

Arctic railway
Arctic Train transports you 43 kilometres through a desolate, wild and beautiful landscape along the Ofot line. The line stretches from Narvik in Nordland to Kiruna in Sweden and is Norway's most northerly railway. From the ice-blue fjord in Narvik to the bare mountains in Sweden, there are several historical events that form a dramatic backdrop for this excursion.
The construction of the Ofotbanen started at the end of the 19th century to ensure access to an ice-free export port for the huge iron ore deposits from northern Sweden. Itinerant workers, so-called "rallers" sought their fortune in what was referred to as Europe's "Klondyke", and at most over 5,000 people were involved in the construction of the track. As an export route for Europe's largest and most important iron ore deposits, the route was particularly important to control during the Second World War.

Reine by RIB boat
Immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Lofoten Islands in search of sea eagles in a RIB (rigid inflatable boat). A short transfer will take you to the nearby RIB pier, where your guide will fit you with a protective waterproof suit. As you set off with your experienced helmsman, you will whisk across the sparkling waters, perhaps leaping over the wake of a passing ferry and sidling up to vertical cliffs rising from the water.
The RIB tour will take you around Reinefjord. You will take a break along the way see sea eagles. With a wingspan of more than six feet, these birds of prey are an impressive sight. Fish will be used to attract them, so there is a good chance you will see one. Afterward, you will return to your ship by RIB.

Charm of Lofoten
Spend a leisurely day learning about the maritime history of the Lofoten Islands. Discover the architecture of the fishermen's dwellings, which today serve as popular holiday homes for visitors who want to take part in the region's many outdoor activities.
From the pier, embark your coach for a scenic drive to Å. This village is an open-air museum, representing the Lofoten's fisheries and displays 150 year old coastal building environments. Upon arrival, you will be free to discover the village at your own pace for 30 minutes
Continue your scenic drive to Flakstad Bay to explore the charming 18th-century red church. It is the second oldest church in Lofoten and built in the shape of a cross.
Then, you will take the direction of Sund to visit the interesting Fishery Museum and Smithy. The museum was originally established in 1964, in the idea of a unique and lively museum, depicting the history of boats and fishing equipment. You will be able to take a closer look at the blacksmith at work, perhaps creating a cormorant, an important fishermen's symbol. Discover various objects including boats, utensils from fishermen's homes and working boat engines, from the beginning of this century.
Reboard the coach and return to Reine.

Vestvagoy & Lofotr Museum
From the pier, embark your coach and head to the village of Borg.
Upon arrival, enjoy a visit to the Lofotr Museum. Here at Borg, archaeologists have found a chieftain’s farmstead with sensational objects bearing witness to a centre of power during the Viking period. The main house is the largest Viking building ever discovered, measuring 83 metres long and 9 metres high (270 and 30 feet). A copy has been built next to the excavation ground and you will feel as if you were transported back to the year 900, whilst farm animals are grazing peacefully outside.
Then, get back to your coach and head to Flakstad Island for a photostop at the Flakstad church built in 1780, a red little church made of driftwood, believed to have come from Siberia.
Enjoy the drive back to Reine, on charming Lofoten roads.

Aurora Borealis hunt
Set out in search of the unpredictable, ethereal aurora borealis as you watch the night skies over Reine. On a clear night, the northern lights may manifest themselves as faint wisps of colour or great dancing, shimmering curtains of light over the boreal forests and tundra. Ideal conditions include clear night-time skies and sufficient solar activity, as the phenomenon occurs when electrically charged solar particles in the atmosphere interact with Earth’s magnetic field. There is no guarantee that the unpredictable lights will be visible.
Prior to departure, your expert guides will study the forecast to best predict where and when the lights will appear. You will venture out to viewpoints in and around Leknes, where weather conditions can vary greatly in a small geographical area and change again within short spans of time. With luck, you will be rewarded with a glimpse of this majestic wonder.

Mikkelgammen Sami camp
This tour gives you the opportunity to enjoy an authentic native experience at a traditional Sami Camp.
After meeting your coach at the pier, a short drive will take you to Mount Salen, where you will be treated to breathtaking panoramic views over the town and the surrounding islands. From here, you will continue on to the Mikkelgammen Sami camp, where you will learn more about the Sami history and culture while seated on reindeer skins that are placed upon springy birch twigs, directly on the ground around an open fire.
During your visit, you will experience joik songs performed by the Sami couple. Joiks are songs dedicated to each member of the Sami population. The Joik has no actual words and can describe, for instance, a particular mood, nature, character or a person. Each Joik is personal and unique to each member. The Sami people at the camp will be wearing their colourful national costumes, which will be explained in detail.

King Crab safari
Venture out on the waters to catch your own king crab on this thrilling excursion.
Walk to our fishing pier with your guide, put on your required floating suits at the adventure centre, follow your guide to the pier and set off in a deep-sea raft into the pristine waters of Sarnesfjorden. The vistas are breathtaking, with green slopes soaring above the sea on all sides.
Our destination is a stunning fjord, where you will see how prized king crabs are harvested as your guide pulls the trap from the watery depths. Though a crab from these waters can measure up to six feet between its claws and weigh as much as 22 pounds, we are likely to only catch “small” crabs at 6 to 15 pounds.
Back on shore, you will learn about the life, anatomy and history of the king crab and feast on your catch, with preparation tips from the cook.

Kamoyvaer fishing village
Take a glimpse of the region’s rich fishing heritage and learn how it has prospered from its relationship with the sea.
You will drive through Honningsvåg to the most scenic fishing village on Magerøya Island, beautifully nestled at the head of a narrow fjord. This pretty hamlet is home to the “Gallery East of the Sun,” which exhibits art, handicrafts, and books, all inspired by the island and its ever-changing seasons. The artist will welcome you and explain her unusual works. Afterwards, stroll with your guide around the typical fishing wharf and explore on your own.
Your next stop will be the tiny village of Sarnes, where you will enjoy coffee in a lavvo, a traditional structure of the indigenous Sami people. Hear about the king crabs that thrive in these waters, which reach up to six feet in length and weigh as much as 22 pounds.
Then, you will return to your ship.

Scenic Nordkapp
Take in glorious vistas along Europe’s far northern shores and enjoy an independent visit at Nordkapp (North Cape).
You will meet your coach at our berth and transfer approximately one hour to one of Europe’s most stunning natural sights. Located on the reaches of Magerøya Island, where the Norwegian and Barents Seas meet, the cliffs of Nordkapp rise more than 1,000 feet from the sea and are topped by a large, flat plateau.
Upon arrival, you will have time to take in the spectacular vista of barren tundra. You will also have a chance to visit the North Cape Hall, which chronicles the history of the region. Spend time on your own, perhaps visiting the small ecumenical St. John’s Chapel. An excellent film at the visitors’ centre depicts the region through the seasons. Arctic landscapes by dogsledding
From the pier, you will board your coach for a 30-minute transfer to the Husky dog centre. Upon arrival, you will meet your guides and receive a short safety briefing.
Sled over the scenic Arctic landscapes while being pulled by a team of lively huskies. Relax as your experienced musher guides and the well-trained dogs negotiate the rugged terrain. You will breathe the fresh air, riding through the forests and along the Alta river.
At the end of your ride, you will return to the husky farm to warm yourself with a hot beverage while sitting in a traditional Sami lavvu (tent), listening to your guide’s tales of racing sled dogs. You will have an opportunity to spend time there and photograph the charming huskies before returning to your ship.

Sami camp discovery
From the pier, embark on a 1 ¼ hour journey by coach to Máze, a Sami village located on the outskirts of Alta.
The Sami’s roots in Arctic Europe trace back at least 5,000 years. Descendants of nomadic people, they moved depending on their country geopolitic and finished to be confined in the northern extremity of the country. They belong to the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic family, and are mostly represented in Lapland and adjacent areas of Northern Norway, Sweden and Finland. Learn about the vibrant culture of indigenous Norwegians during your visit.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by your hosts, members of a reindeer-herding family. You will have the opportunity to climb on board a reindeer-pulled sled for a picturesque ride along a frozen river. Relax as you glide along to the sound of reindeer bells and snow crunching under hooves.
After your ride, return to the village, where you will be invited into a large traditional tent called a lavvu. Take a seat next to a roaring fire and taste traditional specialities while your hosts entertain you with stories of Sami traditions and modern life. Later, you will return to your ship.

Snowshoes hiking & ice fishing
Try your hand at snowshoeing and ice fishing, two popular winter pastimes in Norway.
From the pier, embark on a 30-minute drive to your staging area, where you will meet your local guide and receive a short safety briefing. Fasten the bindings of your snowshoes and set out into the wintry tundra. You will breathe in the refreshing air and listen to the rhythmic crunching of the snow as you walk along the tree-lined trail. Winter walking is an excellent way to admire the Arctic landscape surrounding Alta.
Then, you will take a break by a frozen lake or river, and be initiated to the ice fishing. Ice fishing is one of the most popular winter activities in Norway, a country which counts thousands of lakes. Every year, enthousiasts of all ages bring their fishing rods and set off to find their own lake full of trout or char. You may cast a fishing line under the ice before being welcomed into a tent to relax by a warming fire. You will enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee or cocoa with a homemade pastry.
Afterward, you will return to your ship.

Aurora Borealis hunt
Your evening experience will start onboard! Your northern lights expert, Trygve will meet you on board the ship, where he will explain the northern lights phenomenon, as well as providing advices on the best camera settings needed to photograph the lights. The hard work of planning has already been done by your expert, by monitoring the skies and the northern lights forecast beforehand to ensure that you will be at the very best location to observe the sky.
Then, board your local coach and head to your observation spot. On location, the anticipation of spotting the lights is all part of the fun, and your eyes are bound to be glued to the sky as you wait for them to show. Trygve has many years of experience, and his sighting rate is an incredible 95%, so if the lights are visible, he should know where to find them. If you are lucky, the vivid colours will certainly amaze you. In fact words cannot do them justice; you really have to see them for yourself! All the camps are situated near warm facilities or ‘Lavvu’s’, where you can enjoy hot drinks whilst you wait for those magical lights.

The Slate Quarry of Alta
From the pier, board your local coach for a short panoramic transfer to Pæskatun, an authentic slate-quarry located near the top of the mountain Pæska - one of several slate mountains in the south of Alta.
Upon arrival, meet a fourth-generation slate miner and get an interesting insight into Alta’s rich slate-industry. Alta Quartzite slate, described as one of the best in the world, is a flat gray mineral that is prized for its hardness, durability, and polished shine. Generations of hard-working men have supported their families by taking out slate from the mountains. Exploiting the slate has been an industry in Alta since the early 1860’s and the slate has been and still is exported all over the world.
Listen as your guide shares stories about his craft and Alta’s slate-cutting industry, from its beginning and up to present day. Explore the museums of small cabins that illustrates the often-brutal work and living conditions once endured by slate miners. Dive into the hard-labor culture and experience historic tools.

Scenic Tromso by RIB boat
This excursion starts at the pier where you will be picked up and escorted to the RIB (rigid-hulled inflatable buoyancy) boat.
Following a short introduction, you will get your equipment (if needed depending on the weather) and briefing, you will sit astride a comfortable seat allowing everyone to enjoy the views. You will then start your exploration of local waterways while admiring stunning seascapes.
You will travel the sheltered waters of Tromso and hear stories from your guide about the history of the city, its people and the creatures native to these parts. You may have the opportunity to spot eagles flying overhead and harbour porpoises in the sea.

Tromso, Arctic capital
Tromsø, the capital of the North is located on Troms, an island covered with forests. It is also called "the gateway to the Arctic", since it used to be the headquarter of seal and walrus hunters, and the starting point for several Arctic expeditions.
From the pier, board your coach for a tour of this charming city and proceed to the Science Centre of Northern Norway. Here, you will sit and lean back in the comfortable chairs of the planetarium to watch the beautiful film "Experience the Aurora". During the 25-minute show, you will learn everything about the illusive Northern Lights with most of the footage shot in the Tromsø region.
After the visit, depart to the Polar Museum. The museum is located in the old Custom House. It is closely linked with the Arctic Association which aims to preserve records from bygone times, when Tromsø was a major base for hunting and expeditions on a larger scale. The museum also shows a great part of the equipment, skis, tents etc. that the explorer Roald Amundsen used on his South Pole expedition.
Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Arctic Cathedral passing the famous Tromsø Bridge. The ultra-modern architecture of the cathedral symbolizes the immense strength of the ice pack in the Arctic Ocean. The interior is dominated by the beautiful stained glass-window covering the eastern wall, picturing "The Return of Christ". After the visit to the church, head back to the pier.

Sweet encounter with huskies
Spend a wonderful time with one of Northern Norway's most iconic animals: the husky.
After travelling through the breathtaking snowy landscapes of the northern part of Norway, you will arrive in Breivikeidet, east of Tromso, with the Lyngen Alps as your backdrop. At base camp, you will be greeted by these sweet creatures that love to interact with people. It is truly a unique experience. After sharing a moment with the huskies, enjoy a delicious coffee break.
